Bayreuth

medi dominates Braunschweig in every department to capture fourth straight win

Bayreuth, 10-14.2016

2,723 enthusiastic spectators celebrate highest home win since promotion back to the top flight

Dominance. There is no better word that could more accurately describe the performance by medi bayreuth in its home game on the 5th matchday of the easyCredit German Basketball League. It was simply impressive to see the professionalism and resolve with which the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner tackled the encounter against Basketball Lions Braunschweig and also kept that up throughout the 40 minutes to run out winners by 96:48 (47:27). Once again, the Heroes Of Tomorrow displayed an all-round team performance, to which youngster Moritz Trieb also made his contribution. Right after the game, he was able to crown medi’s fourth win in a row with the obligatory “Humba” among the fans. A few minutes earlier, the 18-year-old scored his first two points in his debut in the easyCredit German Basketball League.

The win meant that medi bayreuth has not only broken its record of 4:1 wins from the opening of the 2012/2013 season after gaining promotion back to the first division, but also celebrated its highest win in its seventh year in the German league. Its largest winning margin before that dates from October 10, 2013. The opponent back then: New York Phantoms Braunschweig under Head Coach Raoul Korner.

What Trey Lewis had to say

“I have to thank my teammates today. Kyan and Basti did a magnificent job and kept on finding me time and again. Almost all my buckets came from assists by the two of them. We wanted to focus on defense today and we did that successfully. The victory against his last team was definitely something very special for the coach. It was great to celebrate with the fans, especially all the kids, after the game. Our fans give us so much energy and get behind us all the time. That was a very special moment for me today.”

16:2 run paves the way for victory

The visitors from Lower Saxony were only able to keep up for four minutes: Geoffrey Groselle put his side 8:6 ahead with a three-point play. After that, medi slowly began ticking over and a 10:4 run up to the end of the first period put the Heroes Of Tomorrow back in front.

The second quarter got off to a spectacular start. In just two minutes, Bayreuth stretched its lead by a further ten points (26:12 in the 12th minute). In particular, Trey Lewis excelled with a large haul of points in this spell, picking up exactly half of his final total of 26 in the space of just four minutes in the second period. They included what was probably the game’s most spectacular bucket: The lay-up by Trigger Trey to make it 36:21 in the 16th minute after a 360-degree turn is bound to among the top ten of Telekom Basketball.

Yet other players from Raoul Korner’s team also left their stamp on the first half: For example De’Mon Brooks and Andreas Seiferth, who snapped up rebound after rebound and also demonstrated reliable accuracy in his shooting. medi thus extended the lead to 47:27 going into the break.

Five medi players get into double digits

Who thought in the second period that things could not get any better for Bayreuth was proven wrong in the third quarter. The Heroes Of Tomorrow took the third period 25:5 and literally swept the Basketball Lions off court. After further threes by Trey Lewis and Robin Amaize, the lead grew to more than 30 points for the first time in the 26th minute (62:31). Trey Lewis even made it 72:32 after a fast break in the 29th minute – shortly after Robin Amaize, who was bursting with enthusiasm, reliably drained two more buckets from downtown.

Bayreuth remained resolute in the final quarter, which it likewise clearly dominated. Nine points without reply made it 81:34 in the 34th minute and when Lewis buried his sixth three of the evening, there were even 51 points between the teams (87:36 in the 35th minute). With around three minutes to go, Moritz Trieb was then able to make personal history and get his name on the scouting report with his first points in the German league – while the fans in the stands had already started their victory celebrations with several La Ola waves.
