Successful first home game of the season: Heroes Of Tomorrow defeat Wolves

Bayreuth, 10-03-2017

It was as expected a tough game, but medi bayreuth finally captured its hoped-for win in its first home game of the new season. The Wolves from Mitteldeutscher BC, back in the top flight after an absence of one year, put up a plucky fight against the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner in a great tussle that the Heroes Of Tomorrow ultimately decided in their favor by 82:74 (38:35).

After the game, Bastian Doreth was satisfied at the successful start to the season and second win in two games. “Robin had a fantastic game today, but there are many different factors, such as Assem’s rebounding or the calm John with his experience has brought to our play, that make us stand out at the moment. We’re a very good basketball team that can even become a lot better,” summed up the captain.

Buoyed by a victory against Oettinger Rockets in the season opener, the Wolves put on a strong and confident performance in the Oberfrankenhalle. medi took the lead, but the MBC quickly wrested control. The visitors, driven on in particular by Kruize Pinkins and Djordje Drenovac, went in front. In the ranks of the Heroes Of Tomorrow, it was mainly Assem Marei who was sought and successfully found by his teammates. The Egyptian, with eight points and four rebounds, was the man of the first period. However, the visitors from Saxony-Anhalt led narrowly by two points after the first quarter.

Both teams visibly stepped up a gear in defense in the second period. John Cox and Steve Wachalski came off the bench to give stability to medi’s play, but the MBC was not to be shaken off. Spurred on by the strong Robin Amaize, the Heroes Of Tomorrow were able to open up a slight gap at one stage (32:26), but the visitors from Weißenfels were almost level by half-time.

Although the Wolves equalized again after the break thanks to a bucket from downtown by the conspicuous Kruize Pinkins, Bayreuth then managed to stay in front as a result of five points by De’Mon Brooks. The players of Head Coach Raoul Korner maintained the 45:38 lead, mainly because they rebounded well at the boards. The greatest threat from the visitors in this spell was from the three-point line, but medi took the third period by five points and so led 55:47 going into the final quarter.

Assem Marei gave his side a double-digit lead for the first time in the 31st minute (57:47). He and Robin Amaize were virtually unstoppable on the evening and were instrumental in ensuring their side’s victory. Nate Linhart, who stretched the gap to 65:53 with a three and narrowly missed out on a double-double, was one of the key assets in medi’s play. Buckets from outside kindled hopes of a comeback among the MBC’s fans, but the Heroes Of Tomorrow did not let the score get any tighter than 59:65. Nate Linhart and Robin Amaize struck back immediately from beyond the arc to make it 74:64 and as good as seal the game.
