The e-bike transition

Würzburg, 2019-30-08

Slow traffic, late trains or overcrowded buses: getting to work every morning can be a real challenge. An e-bike with a Brose drive offers a true alternative, especially in urban areas.

Julia Grimm gets to her place of work quickly without having to worry about the traffic in Würzburg. The 31-year-old is responsible for recruiting in the Drives business division of the Brose location there. Her apartment is eight kilometers away. She began riding to work on her Brose-powered e-bike early this year – and she gets there faster than ever before.

“I live in a very hilly area of Würzburg, which is why I always drove to work before. It was about a 20-minute drive including the time it took me to find a parking space – now with my e-bike it takes me the same amount of time, but the route I take is absolutely idyllic. It winds through fields and offers a spectacular view of the vineyards.”

The simple fact is: riding a bike is usually faster for distances up to five kilometers – and even up to ten kilometers with an e-bike. Taking bike paths far away from busy roads is very enjoyable. Fresh air and no stop-and-go traffic – that’s hard to find in a major city.

Now that Julia Grimm owns an e-bike the steep bike path to work is no longer a problem. It winds through vineyards and offers spectacular views of Würzburg. Thanks to the Brose drive, she’s never out of breath, even on the uphill ride, and she arrives at work relaxed and ready to start her day.

Once ridiculed, now popular

It wasn’t too long ago that people would roll their eyes and grin when senior citizens buzzed by effortlessly on their pedelecs. But the image of e-bikes has changed: now more and more athletic riders are taking advantage of the e-support, especially in mountainous regions where conventional bikes quickly reach their limits. E-bikes offer new options for different and longer tours.

Julia Grimm chose a sporty trekking bike because it meets all of her requirements. “I mainly ride to work or into town. On the weekends my boyfriend and I sometimes tour the region on our bikes. The thing I like most about the Brose drive is that it is virtually silent. It really propels the bike forward, making riding a breeze. But it still gives you the feeling of riding a bike and being active,” she explains.

Julia Grimm leased her e-bike from Brose. She simply picked her favorite model from all of the e-bikes equipped with a Brose drive. Among other things, the lease package includes comprehensive insurance coverage, e.g. against theft or accidental damage. Best of all, she not only saves time; she also doesn’t have to stop to fill up anymore. She just charges her e-bike battery once or twice a week – which only costs her 19 cents per charge.

The new Brose Drive System: This is the first time Brose is offering a proprietary system comprising a drive, operating unit and battery.
