s.Oliver Würzburg suffers two defeats over the long weekend

München / Bayreuth, 10-02.2016

s.Oliver Würzburg is still waiting for its first win after the second matchday of the new season: The club from Lower Franconia was defeated on the road at FC Bayern Munich by 77:90 (44:54) in the Bavarian derby on Friday evening. The game’s top scorers in the sold-out Audi Dome in Munich were Brendan Lane (24 points) for Würzburg and the ex-Würzburg player Maximilian Kleber (20 points) for the home side. The next away challenge awaits the team of Head Coach Doug Spradley in the first Franconian derby of the season at medi bayreuth on Sunday (tip-off: 6 p.m.).

s.Oliver Würzburg began the derby with one change over its home encounter against Ludwigsburg, with Vladimir Mihailovic replacing Maurice Stuckey in the starting five. The new signing repaid that with a strong performance (17 points / 4 threes / 5 turnovers / 5 assists). However, it took a while for Mihailovic and his teammates to get into the game – the opening spell belonged to the home side, which led by 9:2 after three minutes and so laid the foundation for a start-to-finish win.

The gap had increased to 20:7 in the 7th minute, but then James Southerland triggered the visitors’ first comeback with a bucket from beyond the arc. Vladimir Mihailovic with eight points in a row and Kresmir Loncar with Würzburg’s fifth three-pointer in the first period narrowed the gap to 24:21 after the first ten minutes. Würzburg was able to keep the opening spell of the second quarter evenly poised (31:27 in the 13th minute), among other things with a spectacular bucket by Mihailovic from over nine meters out. But then Munich pulled away again. Trailing by 14 points (47:33 in the 17th minute), the visitors hits back again to reduce the deficit at half-time to 54:44.

The third period then produced the deciding spell in the game: After Jake Odum cut the gap to 62:54 in the 26th minute, the club from Bavaria’s capital produced a run of 11 without reply, above all thanks to eight points by Danilo Barthel. The home side went into the final period 75:55 ahead – its highest lead in the encounter. The visitors never gave up and were able to slice the deficit in half in the final quarter (5:75 in the 37th minute), but Munich’s deserved victory was never seriously in jeopardy.

Too many mistakes in the Franconian derby against medi Bayreuth

s.Oliver Würzburg also came away empty-handed from its second game on the road on the weekend: After the defeat in Munich on the Friday, the team from Lower Franconia went down against medi bayreuth by 71:83 (28:42) in the Franconian derby on Sunday. In front of 3,011 spectators in the Oberfrankenhalle, the visitors made too many mistakes, especially in the first half, to have a real chance of capturing their first win of the season.
