BBL: Poor Start Costs Baskets the Victory!

Bonn, 03-15-2025

After home victories against Frankfurt and FC Bayern Munich, the Bamberg Baskets were unable to follow up on their success on the 24th matchday. In the away game against Telekom Baskets Bonn, the team led by Head Coach Anton Gavel lost 77-87 on Saturday evening in front of 5,666 spectators at the Telekom Dome.

The Bonn team had the better start to the game. The hosts were noticeably more aggressive at the beginning and quickly took the lead after two Bamberg turnovers in the first two minutes of the game. Bamberg initially stayed close and narrowed the gap, but then followed a weaker phase, resulting in a score of 16-29 after the first quarter. The start of the second quarter also belonged to the home team, who held their highest lead of the evening at 16-35. Although Bamberg fought back temporarily, Bonn also knew how to counter. At halftime, the score was 36-50 for the Magenta team, who had better shooting percentages from all distances. In the third quarter, the Baskets played better and came within nine points before Brandon Horvath's three-pointer bounced out of the basket and the opposing side successfully landed one.In the fourth quarter, Bamberg continued to fight their way into the game. An 8-0 start reduced the deficit to four points, but during this comeback phase, Filip Stanić got injured. The Bamberg center landed on Rivaldo Soares' foot and twisted his ankle during a fast break after an alley-oop attempt. The game could have still turned in favor of Bamberg, but the hosts showed nerves of steel and pulled away to 68-79. As the following three-point attempts missed their target, the decision in favor of the Rhinelanders was made after 83-71.

On Wednesday, 19.03.2025, the return match in the playoffs of the European North Basketball League against Dziki Warsaw is scheduled. Jump is at 20:00.
