HC Erlangen is awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize

Munich, 07-16-2016

The HC Erlangen has received a very great honor. The top handball team received the Bavarian Sport Award in the category “Special Prize” at the BMW Welt in Munich. In awarding this prize, the Bavarian government paid tribute to the great sporting success of HC Erlangen last season – and to the fact that the Middle Franconians have infected an entire German state with the handball virus and put Bavaria on the map of elite league handball.

This prize has been awarded by the Bavarian Prime Minister since 2002. The yearly ceremony hosts an audience of around 700 prominent guests from sport, society, media, politics and business. The Bavarian Sport Prize is awarded to successful Bavarian athletes and to Bavarians with vision and creativity to honor them for their special commitment to sport and for promoting and supporting sport in Bavaria.

The Bavarian Sports Prize is the most prestigious sporting award of the Free State of Bavaria – and the HC Erlangen has now followed successful sports teams such as Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg and the Brose Baskets Bamberg who have also won the prize. The HC Erlangen is the seventh team to receive this Bavarian government award, which has never been won by a Bavarian handball club. “We are incredibly proud to have received such an important award today. The outstanding performance of the HC Erlangen is recognized and honored, even far beyond the city limits. It is especially important to me that I also mention the many great HCE fans, helpers and sponsors from all over Bavaria. We also accepted the Bavarian Sports Prize today in their name,” says Dr. Carsten Bissel, President and Supervisory Board Chairman of the HCE.

Accompanied by the applause of the invited guests, Pavel Horák accepted the award from Minister of State Joachim Herrmann, who highlighted the Bundesliga team's development in recent years. “The HC Erlangen is the flagship of Bavarian handball and they have proved that once again. As Minister of Sport, I am proud that a club like this, a team like this is in Franconia – and calls Bavaria home,” said Joachim Herrmann in conclusion.
