Basketball Bundesliga: Bamberg clearly defeated by Bonn

Bamberg, 11-19-2021

What a pitch-black Friday for Brose Bamberg: first the prospect of only being allowed to play the next home games in front of a maximum of 1,500 fans from December onwards due to the stricter Corona rules. Then the positive Corona test of Kenneth Ogbe, who immediately went into quarantine - and last but not least a disastrous 80:100 home defeat against Telekom Baskets Bonn in the evening.

The first four minutes were a mirror reflection of the entire game: Bonn were consistent on defense and stole the ball from Bamberg's playmaker Justin Robinson three times in seven offensive attempts. In addition, the guests hit the first four three-pointers in a row, added a basket on top - and the Bamberg home side was down 5:14. Although the Roijakkers boys came back to 20:23 after a three-pointer by Christian Sengfelder and two free throws by Patrick Heckmann, they continued to be frighteningly weak. By the end of the quarter, Bonn had scored seven more points in one minute and extended the 23:30 lead to 38:56 in the second quarter. The Bamberg team could not get a grip on defense, especially playmaker Parker Jackson-Cartwright was able to play his passes to the free shooters, so that Bonn had already made seven three-pointers in the Bamberg basket by halftime.

The home side did not fare any better after the change of ends: once again, Roijakkers' boys caught 27 points in one quarter, and Bonn managed to pull away with four three-pointers to 53:80 in the meantime. There was hardly any resistance from Bamberg and when two or three nice attacks led to points - like at the end of the third quarter with Lockhart's layup, Elias Baggett's cut through the defense with a basket and Prewitt's three-pointer - Bonn responded immediately with points, 60:83 before the final quarter. Not much changed there, top scorer Christian Sengfelder (24 points) once again pushed the deficit below 20 points (74:93) with a three-pointer, but a Bamberg comeback failed to materialize. Besides the captain, Omar Prewitt (14), Justin Robinson (11) and Trevis Simpson (12 points) scored in double figures.

Johan Roijakkers (head coach Brose Bamberg): "We played well in the first quarter. The second was disastrous and we lost the game there. The second half was just about the result. Offensively, we were actually good the whole game. But defensively, we just weren't there. Nowhere. I did everything to prepare the team well for this game. That's why I can live with this result. That's just my attitude. There are worse things in life than losing a game."

After the international break, Brose Bamberg will be under pressure to win against local rivals medi Bayreuth on Saturday, 04.12.2021, starting at 6 pm.
