Basketball Bundesliga: Brose Bamberg loses to Oldenburg

Bamberg, 03-08-2022

It should have been a day of jubilation for Bamberg basketball. Exactly 30 years to the day after the 1992 Cup victory, the first national title in Bamberg basketball, 2750 fans were finally allowed into the Brose Arena again. But the Bambergers lost the game clearly with 83:106.

The hosts started defensively. In the first fifteen minutes, the two top scorers Chris Sengfelder, who scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half, and Tomas Kyzlink (18 points) put the offensive stamp on the game.

But the Oldenburgers managed to implement the style of play of their new coach Ingo Freyer better and better. Offensive rebounding, quick passing and throwing against a not yet organised Bamberg defence - point by point the guests caught up. Three minutes before the break, Oldenburg took the first lead, which they extended until the half-time break (49:55).

In the second half, the Bamberg team lost more and more balls. In defence, there was little resistance, especially against Oldenburg's playmaker Max Heidegger. The guests continued to pull away, so that in the fourth quarter some Bamberg fans were already whistling. The game was decided at the latest after the 0:15 run at the beginning of the final quarter. Besides Dowe, Sengfelder and Kyzlink, Martinas Geben and Justin Robinson scored in double figures with ten points each.

Oren Amiel (Head Coach Brose Bamberg): "That was an embarrassing performance today. That's all I can think of. What we showed in defence for long stretches of the game was just embarrassing. There's really nothing more to say about it. Oldenburg played well, they scored well. But all that should not hide our weak defence. We have a lot to do!"

On Saturday, 12 March 2022, Brose Bamberg will face the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.
