Basketball Bundesliga: medi bayreuth defeats HAKRO Merlins with 99:77

Bayreuth, 10-23-2022

With a very strong team performance, medi bayreuth clinched its second win of the season in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon. In front of 2,672 spectators, Head Coach Lars Masell's team defeated HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim clearly with 99:77.

From the beginning of the game, the medi boys looked highly concentrated. Kay Bruhnke increased the hosts' lead to five points after just four minutes. After a good five minutes, guest coach Sebastian Gleim was forced to call his team in for a meeting to readjust them, because medi bayreuth fought tirelessly and was already leading 17:8 at this point. Whenever you thought the guests would come back at this point, the medi players scored at a high percentage. With 32:18, the Bayreuth team decided the first quarter in their favor.

Also in the second part of the game, the medi players didn't let up a bit, quite the opposite! Monster blocks on defense, dream plays and drive to the basket on offense really brought the Oberfrankenhalle to a boil. Any attempt by the Merlins to catch up was immediately nipped in the bud and countered by the Bayreuthers. At 54:34, the sides were changed.

The guests from the Hohenlohe region had a lot to make up for and that's exactly how they started the second half. Point by point, the Magicians fought their way back. Now it was medi Head Coach Lars Masell who asked his boys for a timeout at 62:47 to readjust them and stop the Crailsheim run. This was successful, because the hosts were more focused again and did not allow HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim to really catch up. The medi boys let their opponents come as close as 13 points, but then looked confident at all times in order to extend their lead again. Thus, the Bayreuth team lost the third quarter by 19:24, but still went into the final period with a 73:58 lead.

There was no longer any doubt as to who would leave the floor as the winner this evening. The medi players were in control of the situation at all times and extended the lead to 26 points, so that Head Coach Lars Masell was able to give youngster Florian Kämpf some playing time for the first time, which he crowned with the last point at the free throw line for the final score of 99:77.

Lars Masell (Head Coach medi bayreuth): "Of course I am happy with the result. What makes me very happy is the fact how we implemented the things we had discussed in training. I think it was a deserved win for us today!"

Now it is important to take the momentum from today's game to Ulm in order to also land the first away win in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga after the Cup victory next Saturday. Jump in the ratiopharm arena is at 6 pm.
