Basketball Bundesliga: medi bayreuth loses in Bonn

Bonn, 03-18-2022

Medi bayreuth ultimately came away with nothing on the 26th day of play in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga when they visited Telekom Baskets Bonn. The medi team visibly ran out of steam against the second-placed team after the second half. In the end, the guests lost with 65:86.

The game on the Hardtberg opened with a Lithuanian jump ball between Saulius Kulvietis and returnee Martynas Sajus. So it was also up to these two players to score the first points of their teams. While the Bonners always tried to keep the speed at their proven fast pace, the guests tried to stop exactly this flow of play, which they managed well in the first ten minutes. Accordingly, Head Coach Raoul Korner's team ended the first quarter with a narrow 19:18 lead.

Also at the beginning of the second game unit, the close course continued as in the first ten minutes, so that the guests were still in the lead at 28:26. The Finn proved that this was not what Tuomas Iisalo had in mind with a time-out in which he obviously shook his team awake. From then on, his team acted much more aggressively both in defence and in attack. Since medi lost too many balls in this phase, the Bonn team took the lead and extended it to 40:34 by half-time.

After the change of ends, the game initially developed on an equal footing. Although the Bonn team quickly took a double-digit lead after a successful three-pointer by Saulius Kulvietis, medi did not give up and fought their way back to within 50:55 of the Telekom Baskets in the middle of the third quarter. By the quarter break, however, the Rhinelanders had once again stepped up a gear, while medi's strength was visibly beginning to wane. Tuomas Iisalo's team knew how to take advantage of this and managed to pull away to 69:56.

In the final period, the hosts quickly made things clear with a 17:0 run across all quarters. It took Head Coach Raoul Korner's team more than 5:30 minutes until Janari Jõesaar redeemed his team and scored the first points of the quarter. At this point, the deficit was already 17 points, which the hosts were able to continuously increase to 27 points. Medi bayreuth lost to the hosts with 65:86.

"First of all, congratulations to Bonn on the well-deserved victory. It was a bit like we feared. In the end, you could see that we got weaker every quarter. I hope that we can get better now, get the players fit and then see a clear improvement in performance in the next home game," Raoul Korner (Head Coach medi bayreuth) commented on the game.
