BBL Cup: Bamberg Wins in the Last Second!

Bamberg, 10-12-2024

The Bamberg Baskets are in the quarterfinals of the BBL Cup! Coach Anton Gavel’s team narrowly defeated ratiopharm Ulm in an exciting and nerve-wracking match with a score of 103:100.

Initially, things didn’t look good against the undefeated Ulm team, who had recently celebrated six consecutive victories. The guests quickly pulled away from 4:11 to 21:36 and maintained the 15-point lead until the 13th minute (27:42). A thunderous dunk by Moritz Krimmer was the wake-up call for the hosts to start their comeback. With a 17:4 run, Bamberg closed the gap to 44:46. After the break, Ibrahim Watson gave the hosts their first lead (63:62). The reliable three-point shooters Kyle Lofton and Kevin Wohlrath extended the lead to 83:74. However, Ulm did not give up and equalized at 100:100 with two seconds left. Anton Gavel used his last timeout to discuss the final shot with his team. Ronaldo Segu then took the inbound pass and passed the ball to Ibrahim Watson in the corner. The ball quickly returned to Segu, who had run back onto the court, and with just under a second left on the clock, he released the ball towards the Ulm basket, where it swished through the net for the much-celebrated 103:100 victory.

Not only because of this last action, the 3,826 spectators in the BROSE ARENA on Saturday evening got their money’s worth. The BBL Cup thriller in the round of 16 between their Baskets and ratiopharm Ulm was definitely not for the faint-hearted. In the end, it was Bamberg who rewarded their vehement effort with a place in the next round.

In the quarterfinals of the BBL Cup, another thriller awaits the Bamberg Baskets. As the draw on Sunday evening at the Telekom Dome in Bonn revealed, Head Coach Anton Gavel’s team can once again count on home advantage in the round of the last eight teams, just as they did in the round of 16 against Ulm. The opponent in the quarterfinals will be the 11-time cup winner ALBA BERLIN at the BROSE ARENA on the weekend of December 7th and 8th.
