Brose Baskets came away empty-handed from their final group game in the last 32 of the Eurocup against the German champions FC Bayern Munich. As in the previous game between the two in the European competition, the game was as good as decided by half-time: Bayern led by 43:26 and eventually ran out winners by 87:63 in the Audi Dome. However, Bamberg had already qualified for the last sixteen of the Eurocup before the final matchday in the group and will come up against the as yet unbeaten Russian club Lokomotiv Kuban on March 4.

Brose Baskets only led on a single occasion in the Audi-Dome: Dalibor Bagaric had tied the scores at 2:2 with a hook throw, after which Dawan Robinson added a lay-up (2:4). However, Bamberg then conceded far too many turnovers (18 in the entire game) and the home side pulled away to lead 16:10. Ryan Thompson (11 points) drained a bucket from beyond the arc, but Bayern struck back right away with two lay-ups (20:13). Just before the end of the period (23:17), Head Coach Andrea Trinchieri was penalized with a technical foul for protesting too vehemently against a refereeing decision.

Bamberg gave itself no chance of keeping in the game because of its losses of possession, especially in the second quarter. Apart from a lay-up by Daniel Theis, Brose Baskets were not able to score for a whole seven minutes, enabling Bayern to surge 38:19 ahead and as good as seal the game. Bayern likewise responded to the three from top scorer Theis (19 points, 10 rebounds) with a bucket from outside and a lay-up (43:21). All the same, Theis’ bucket from close distance and Dalibor Bagaric’s three-point play made it 43:26 at half-time. Trinchieri’s team at least got off to the better start at the beginning of the second half: Dawan Robinson and Bradley Wanamaker (both 8 points) scored, after which Trevor Mbakwe was fouled while making a lay-up and reduced the deficit to 46:35 with the bonus free throw. Yet after Thompson added a lay-up to make it 48:37, John Bryant was awarded two dubious fouls in the space of thirty seconds and buried all four free throws to make it 52:37, causing Andrea Trinchieri to blow his top: a loud discussion with the referees ensued, after which Bamberg’s Head Coach was penalized with his second technical foul and ejected. Munich then stretched the gap to 63:45. In the final period, Brose Baskets were no longer able to reduce the gap against Bayern’s strong defense. On the contrary: the FCB pulled even further away to 87:63 thanks to two threes in the last twenty seconds.

Andrea Trinchieri commented: “We got off to a limp start. And when you do that against a team that was assembled to play in the Euroleague, then things get hard. We had a better start to the third period, but that wasn’t enough. We have to become tougher. Every contact led to an advantage for Munich. The only positive thing from this game is that it didn’t count for us. Bayern is streets ahead of us at the moment and from now on we have to find a way to close that gap.”

Brose Baskets now welcome TBB Trier to the Brose Arena on Sunday, February 15, 2015, and aim to notch up their twelfth straight victory of the season in the German league and continue their unbeaten home record. Bamberg won the away game between the two earlier in the season by 74:61. The tip-off is at 5 p.m.
