Europe Cup: Bayreuth leaves the competition with a defeat

Warsaw, 02-09-2022

Bayreuth's season in the FIBA Europe Cup has ended with a defeat. On the 6th matchday of the 2nd group phase, the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner lost to Legia Warsaw with 55:80 (44:59) in Poland's capital on Wednesday evening.

While Doreth, Seiferth, Thornton, Jalalpoor and Sanders were missing on the Bayreuth side due to illness or injury, the Poles were able to field their strongest formation. For the hosts, the backcourt axis around Johnson Jr, Abdur-Rahkman and Cowels III was especially convincing, with 57 points scored by them alone. Medi did not want to succeed, especially from beyond the three-point line. Only four of Bayreuth's total of 27 three-pointers their target.

"Our squad doesn't give more at the moment, so in the last few weeks we have clearly focused on the BBL games and used the Europe Cup as training games. No one could predict how much we would be affected by retirements this season. So, before the competition, we had quite legitimately thought we had a chance of reaching the Final Four again. Now we will have to combine all our forces to be competitive in the BBL. To do that, we will need every single player, but especially every single fan," said Raoul Korner (Head Coach medi bayreuth) after the game.

The next difficult task in the Basketball Bundesliga is already scheduled for next Saturday. At 6:00 p.m. Bayreuth receives the MLP Academics Heidelberg in the Oberfrankenhalle.
