Frankfurt

medi Bayreuth’s upward trend continues

Frankfurt, 11-11-2018

medi Bayreuth has come away from Frankfurt with an important win in the easyCredit German Basketball League. The team of Head Coach Raoul Korner defeated FRAPORT SKYLINERS 91:81 (50:38) on the road on Sunday afternoon to capture its third victory in its sixth game of the season.

medi Bayreuth was determined to turn in another good performance like the one last Wednesday. However, it was Frankfurt who seized the momentum at the start of the encounter, quickly pulling 7:0 ahead. Yet Bayreuth was unperturbed and was able to tie the scores at 9:9 with a bucket from outside by Kassius Robertson. A very attractive game in which FRAPORT SKYLINERS was always able to hold on to a narrow lead ensued up to the end of the period.

The only time the lead changed hands in the entire 40 minutes occurred on the first attack of the second quarter, when captain Bastian Doreth drained a three. medi now began to tick over smoothly. Yet it was not able to build a larger lead, mainly due to the fact that Frankfurt snapped up nine offensive rebounds. The two teams went in at half-time with Bayreuth 50:38 in front.

The big question in the second 20 minutes was whether Bayreuth had learned from the preceding games and would manage this time to capitalize on its half-time lead. To begin with, however, it looked like the familiar pattern would be repeated. After barely three minutes of play, the team of Gordon Herbert had cut the deficit to three points and was back within striking distance. A timeout was due and Raoul Korner found the right words, with the result that Bayreuth was able to open up a double-digit gap again thanks to better defending and beautifully carved-out points. Nevertheless, Frankfurt had now got into the game better. Spurred on by Quantez Robertson and Bayreuth’s steadily dwindling 3-point field goal percentage, FRAPORT SKYLINERS got back to within four points.

As a result, a thrilling encounter ensued in the final period and, although medi Bayreuth wobbled briefly on several occasions, it was ultimately able to run out winners. That was due in particular to the fact that Frankfurt’s 3-point field goal percentage was too weak and medi Bayreuth was determined not to let another game slip from its grasp in the deciding period. It was thus Hassan Martin in defense who ultimately sealed victory for Bayreuth.
