Coburg

Second-period slump

Coburg, 09-29-2018

BBC COBURG was not able to fulfill its hopes of capturing its first win of the season in the BARMER ProB South 2nd German Basketball League in its first home game of the new campaign, losing to the strong wiha Panthers Schwenningen by 66:78 (27:42), in particular due to a disastrous second period. As a result, the BBC is still without a point after two games.

Yet the home side began decently in front of around 600 spectators in the HUK-COBURG Arena: New captain Yasin Turan and Dino Dizdarevic drained their first two attempts from beyond the arc without hesitating to give their side a quick 6:2 lead. The visitors, who above all impressed with their physical strength, then gradually unfurled their qualities, but Coburg always had an answer up to the end of the first period, which finished level at 22:22.

Unfortunately, that would change fundamentally in the second quarter: Head Coach Ulf Schabacker’s players completely lost the thread in offense and were only able to add a meager five points in the next ten minutes. That was attributable to more intense defending by the club from the Black Forest, but also to the fact that Coburg relied on all too obvious solo efforts, instead of sticking rigorously to the team play it produced in the opening spell. As a result, the home side trailed by the clear margin of 27:42 at half-time.

After the break, the team of Head Coach Alen Velcic calmly played out the game with all its experience. In contrast, BBC COBURG was not able to exploit the Panthers’ many technical mistakes and high foul count in order to cut the deficit decisively. In addition, the newly promoted club also thwarted Coburg’s solid defense sequences repeatedly by making difficult last-ditch shots.

It was not until the final spell of the encounter that the BBC’s hopes were rekindled: The home side produced a run of ten points without reply to claw its way back to 65:74, but that was no longer enough to compensate for yet another below-average field goal percentage of 32.
