Tennis: Krawietz and Mies triumph in Barcelona

Barcelona, 04-24-2022

Brose-backed tennis pro Kevin Krawietz and his doubles partner Andreas Mies won the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona on Sunday, their first title since the French Open 2020, beating Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the semi-finals. Just a few hours later, they secured their first title of the year in the match tiebreak of the Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski final, 6-7, 7-6, 10-6.

Since the semi-final match against Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni on Saturday had to be interrupted shortly after the start due to persistent rain and rescheduled for the next day, "Kramies" had two challenging matches for the title ahead of them on Sunday. After Gonzalez/Molteni had won the first set 8:6, the German duo showed nerves of steel, fought their way back into the match in the second and forced a match tiebreak. First, Krawietz and Mies managed to take an 8:5 lead and then used their first match point to win 10:7. With this result, "Kramies" eliminated their opponents and entered the final.

There, Krawietz and Mies met the Dutch-British double Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. In the first set, the German duo quickly trailed 1:5, but they did not let this throw them off track and after two break points they found their way back into the match. Since neither team was able to gain an advantage, the match went into a tiebreak. Because Krawietz and Mies gave up three service games, Koolhof/Skupski were able to take an initial 7:3 lead. After that, neither of the two doubles managed to pull away, which is why the match went into a tiebreak again. There the German duo broke and took the lead with 5:2. In the match tiebreak, the "Kramies" had four match points and secured victory in the decisive third set.

Next up for Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies is the BMW Open in Munich. We wish the doubles team every success!
