medi bayreuth wins 87:77 in Tübingen for its ninth straight win

Tübingen, 11-20-2016

medi bayreuth continues to write club history! With a fiercely contested 87:77 (40:32) victory on the road at WALTER Tigers Tübingen, the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner chalked up its fifth win in its fifth away game of the season – a record that Bayreuth has never managed in any of the preceding six seasons since regaining promotion since 2010.

In addition, the victory on the tenth matchday in the easyCredit German Basketball League was the ninth in a row for the Heroes Of Tomorrow, who remain third in the table. Around 2,900 spectators in the Paul Horn Arena saw what was all in all a very scrappy game in which both teams made many simple mistakes. With a strong run of 12 points without reply before the break, medi seemed as if had been able to take control, but the home side struck back and equalized again shortly after the break.

However, medi bayreuth had two point guards who were in incredibly accurate shooting form on the evening: captain Bastian Doreth and Kyan Anderson. With a total of seven threes between them, they proved to be the matchwinners and, to the great jubilation of the around 20 medi fans who had made the journey, preserved their side’s increasingly impressive winning streak.

Brief summary of the encounter

The home side dominated the encounter for large parts of the first period, was ahead from the outset and only conceded its first points after three minutes (3:6). After two buckets from downtown (Stewart and Washburn), WALTER Tigers moved into a clear lead (12:5 in the 5th minute). medi then caught up point by point and briefly retook the lead after a 3-point play by Steve Wachalski (16:14 in the 10th minute).

After a three by Doreth (19:17 in the 11th minute), Tübingen turned the game in its favor again and was always slightly ahead up to when Garlon Green made it 32:28 from the foul line in the 18th minute. The last 154 seconds before the break then went to the Heroes Of Tomorrow, who now punished every mistake by Tübingen clinically and produced a 12:0 run. Kyan Anderson contributed six points – including a crazy buzzer-beating three to bring the first half to an end (40:32).

Unperturbed by Bayreuth’s run, the home side from Swabia came out after the break and tied the scores in less than four minutes. Bayreuth only managed one free throw by De’Mon Brooks. It was Garlon Green who equalized again (41:41). Then came the game’s most thrilling spell: The lead changed hands on just about every attack up to when Kyan Anderson made it 51:51 in the 29th minute. The final spell again belonged to medi and it was once more a three by Anderson that wriggled into the hoop on the buzzer: 57:53 for medi.

In the final period, the Heroes Of Tomorrow did not relinquish the lead. Although the game became tense again after Barry Stewart scored (65:67 in the 36th minute), Bayreuth produced an impressive final spurt after calling a timeout. After buckets from outside by Bastian Doreth and Trey Lewis, the visitors led 77:67 with almost two minutes remaining – enough to decide the duel against well-prepared Tigers from Tübingen.
