Basketball: BBC Coburg suffers derby defeat against Breitengüßbach
In front of a great crowd in the Hans-Jung-Halle in Breitengüßbach, BBC Coburg ultimately had to concede defeat to the home side by 84:74. Unfortunately, Coburg was unable to impose its basketball on Güßbach throughout the game and so had to leave the court as losers. The BBC's top scorer was captain Sven Lorber, who put up the biggest fight against the defeat with 19 points. Gabriel Kuku and the two point guards Adrian Worthy and Adrian Petkovic also scored in double figures.
Head Coach Patrick Seidel summed up the derby defeat: "We prepared a few things that we unfortunately didn't implement as we had imagined. Things looked much, much better in training. We just have to understand in games like this that it's also about emotions, that there's a derby atmosphere in it and for many of us it was unfortunately just a normal game and then you just don't win with the atmosphere in halls like this. Respect to our fans! Thank you for having so many there! It was really fun to play in front of so many people. The result is of course disappointing for us and we definitely have to and will work on doing better next time."
Especially after the break, Breitengüßbach was able to open up a double-digit gap at times thanks to a number of turnovers by Coburg and weaknesses in rebounding by the club from Westphalia. Güßbach ultimately decided the rebounding duel clearly in its favor by 48:30 and so repeatedly managed to create second chances to score, which it then converted into points. Coburg was able to cut the gap to three points again three minutes before the end thanks to captain Sven Lorber. However, Breitengüßbach kept a cooler head in crunch time and ultimately decided the Upper Franconian derby 84:74 in its favour.
BBC Coburg continues next weekend with a home game against league leaders Dragons Rhöndorf. Tip-off in the HUK-Coburg arena is at 4 pm on Sunday, 26 November.
