Basketball Bundesliga: Brose Bamberg wins against Ulm

Bamberg, 04-17-2022

This was the second dramatic home win for Brose Bamberg in their battle against play-off rivals within five days. After the highly emotional 88:87 victory over Göttingen, the Amiel team had to stretch over two time-outs to wrestle down fifth-placed ratiopharm ulm 115:114.

The home side had a hard time getting into the game in the first few minutes, the scoreboard quickly showed 2:8 and 8:15 after seven minutes. Dominik Lockhart's three-pointer broke the spell. With the last shot in the first quarter, Akil Mitchell marked the first lead for Bamberg (19:18). After that, the lead changed six times before Bamberg allowed Ulm to be inattentive in defence several times in the middle of the second quarter. But the 33:43 seconds before the break spurred Bamberg on - Martinas Geben hit the difficult jump shot, Kenneth Ogbe stole the ball from Ulm's centre and gave Bamberg a 37:43 half-time lead with a basket.

It took Bamberg three minutes in the second half before the deficit was levelled by Chris Dowe's floater throw to 48:48. The fact that Bamberg did not shorten the gap beforehand was due to their weak three-point quota. Of the first 17 distance shots, only one landed in the basket. Chris Dowe ended the lull with a goal to make it 51:50, and the game went into the final quarter tied 65:65. Again it was the basket shots, now from centre Martinas Geben, that gave Bamberg the lead. Bamberg then tried again with more three-pointers, but after six missed chances Ulm was ahead 83-86. Chris Dove equalised seven seconds before the end, but Ulm's Karim Jallow missed the basket.

In the first overtime, Bamberg went ahead, Justin Robinson hit three three-pointers in a row, but Ulm equalised at 100:96. The last seconds were hectic, Robinson's three-point attempt bounced back out of the basket, in return Ulm's top scorer Jaron Blossomgame took the three-pointer with the siren - also missed. In the second overtime, the lead changed with every attack within the first five minutes. The top scorers Mitchell and Sengfelder took the lead, Ulm followed suit. Sengfelder and Kyzlink had to leave with five fouls, Ulm scored through Blossomgame to make it 112:114. Dowe converted three free throws to make it 115:114, but again Ulm had the last shot to win. Bamberg's defence was very tight, Ulm's basket from under pressure missed, Bamberg won.

"Once again, the atmosphere carried us today. The fans were again our sixth man and helped us to get out of the hole we were in. About the game itself: there were many ups and downs, many simple mistakes on both sides, many great moves from both teams. It was an extremely emotional win today, which could have easily gone the other way," commented Oren Amiel (Head Coach Brose Bamberg) on the game.

On Friday, 22 April 2022, Brose Bamberg will have to face German champion Alba Berlin from 20:30.
