Basketball Bundesliga: Brose Bamberg wins defensive battle in Würzburg

Würzburg, 01-04-2023

It can go on like this: Brose Bamberg started the new year with a 79-73 away win at Würzburg Baskets. With the second success in a row, coach Oren Amiel's team has stalked to within one win of eighth place in the playoffs.

In the first quarter, Bamberg was still struggling with its distance shots. None of the seven three-point attempts, some of which were beautifully played out, landed in the basket in the first ten minutes. The center duel between Bamberg's Gabriel Chachashvili and Würzburg's Filip Stanic was already worth watching both were top scorers for their team with a personal best in the Bundesliga of 22 points, both with nine goals on ten throws. Especially the rebound work: the Amiel boys secured 49 rebounds, 17 offensive rebounds after missed shots they converted into 18 points in the second attempt. Nevertheless, Bamberg was always slightly behind in the first period, 17:19 after the first quarter, 35:42 after 19 minutes.

In the third quarter, Bamberg always stayed on it. With the quarter-long 10:0 run, including seven points by Spencer Reaves, Bamberg pulled away to 71:62. Würzburg did not give up, held Bamberg without a point for four minutes and came back to 73:71. But Bamberg did not show any weakness, Patrick Miller first scored by a basket, then prepared for Christian Sengfelder after an offensive rebound to make it 77:71. Although the Bambergers themselves only managed 15 points in the final period, the strong defense secured the victory with only eleven points allowed.

Oren Amiel (Head Coach Brose Bamberg): "It's no secret that we've had our problems in the last few months. In the first half, we lost the ball far too often and often didn't act well in defensive rebounding either. We improved that in the second half, gaining confidence and getting better throws."

On Saturday, 07 January 2023, Brose Bamberg will host fourth-placed EWE Baskets Oldenburg at Brose Arena. Jump is at 6 p.m.
