Coburg's season ends in the playoff round of 16

Berlin, 04-19-2024

As in the past two seasons, BBC Coburg was eliminated in the round of 16 of the ProB playoffs this season. The Berlin Braves defeated the BBC by a clear 105:73 in Game 2 to advance to the quarter-finals against Leverkusen. Gabriel Kuku was Coburg's best scorer with 21 points in a game in which the Braves did not give the visitors the slightest chance from the start of the second quarter.

The BBC's Head Coach Patrick Seidel summed up his side's final game of the season as follows: "We actually got off to a relatively stable start, but then Berlin hit two or three wild threes, which didn't do our morale any good. Although they haven't been a good shooting team all season, they hit difficult shots that hurt us in the phases when we were able to close the gap a little. Berlin deserved to win, perhaps a little too high. In the end, we still played a good season, had great emotions that year and fought our way through a lot of lows to reach some nice highs. I'm very proud of the team, thanks also to our helpers, the whole staff, everyone around us and especially thanks to our fans!"

After an evenly poised first quarter 23:19, the start of the second period went very badly for the BBC. A 21:0 run put the home side on the road to victory early on. The club from Franconia did not want to succeed in this phase of the game and the Braves exploited Coburg's weak spell with ice-cold precision. The BBC fans had to wait almost six minutes for their team to score its first points in the second quarter. As a result, the visitors went in at half-time with a 19-point deficit, 50:31.

However, Coburg did not bury its head in the sand after the dressing room speeches by both coaches but tried everything once more to keep the season alive after all. By the middle of the third quarter, the deficit had shrunk to 12 points. Yet whenever there was a spark of a BBC comeback in the air, the Braves smothered it immediately and left no doubt as to who would win Game 2 that evening. The outstanding player for Berlin was point guard Andrii Kozhemiakin, who was unstoppable by Coburg's defense with 14 points and 13 assists. It was Noah Litzbach's turn to crack the 100-point mark with a three with one minute remaining.
