Basketball: Next comeback by the BBC

Coburg, 02-17-2024

After a weak first half, the BBC showed its comeback skills again, especially in the final quarter, and defeated the SV Fellbach Flashers by 85:78. Coburg's top scorer was captain Sven Lorber with 22 points. He was joined by Kolten Mortensen with 18, Gabriel Kuku with 16 and Nico Höllerl with 11 points.

Captain Sven Lorber: "Unfortunately, we completely overslept in the first half and lacked intensity and confidence in our own strengths. In the second half, it took us a bit to get into it in offense at the start, but defensively the zone was once again our salvation. That allowed us to create a few stops and play quickly going forward, which is what we're all about, and so we had easy and quick finishes. In the end, it's just important that we win games like that this year. It was definitely a nasty game, but you still have to win games like that in the end to stay in the playoffs. We did very well as a team again in the end. Next game, it would be nice to show the whole thing over 40 minutes and not just in the second half, but we're simply a second-half team."

The BBC showed its attacking prowess in the final quarter in particular and turned the game around with a final spurt. Coburg decided the fourth quarter 31:14 in its favor after trailing by ten points at the end of the third quarter. The functioning zone defense, strong offensive rebounds by Adrian Worthy and a three by Kolten Mortensen heralded the comeback. A further three by him and then five points by Nico Höllerl then enabled Coburg to tie the scores at 69:69. Captain Lorber drained the decisive three with 50 seconds remaining to give his side a four-point lead, but the visitors from Fellbach were no longer able to respond and so the game ultimately ended 85:78 in favor of the home side. It was an important win for the fiercely contested playoff places, with the victory enabling Coburg to work its way up to third place in the table.

After a one-week break, BBC Coburg travels to face league leaders Rhöndorf on March 2 at 6 p.m. in the top game of the 2nd Barmer Basketball Bundesliga Pro B.
