BBC’s four-game winning streak ends with a defeat by OrangeAcademy Ulm

Coburg, 01-12-2019

BBC COBURG lost by 76:85 (39:43) to OrangeAcademy Ulm on Saturday evening in the BARMER ProB South 2nd German Basketball League after four wins in a row. Although it displayed the requisite desire and commitment, not a lot clicked when it came to shooting or taking the right decisions.

Head Coach Ulf Schabacker sprang a surprise at the tip-off by putting the young Christoph Bauer in the starting five. The youngster from Kronach was the least to blame for the fact that the home side did not get into its stride right away against the tall and athletic visitors. It was rather the established players in Coburg’s ranks who lacked resolve and concentration in the first period. As a result, Ulm was quickly able to pull 8:21 ahead, especially thanks to an outstanding display by forward Christoph Philipps in the opening spell, before the BBC’s guard Dino Dizdarevic buried a three and so managed to put a reasonably bearable complexion on the scoreline after ten minutes (15:26).

After that, however, the club from Upper Franconia steadily stepped up its game in front of a crowd of almost 1,100 in the HUK-COBURG arena. Coming from the bench, Steffen Walde injected a lot of energy and reduced the deficit to 22:26 in the 13th minute with a mid-range shot after stealing possession. Christopher Wolf, in customary strong form, added a tip-in and Daniel Krause drained a bucket from beyond the arc to keep BBC in touch (28:33 in the 17th minute). Coburg now defended with greater focus and forced the farm team of the first-division club to make mistakes thanks to uncompromising double coverage. Point guard Chase Adams, who was otherwise luckless with his shots and only made two out of his 12 attempts, cut the gap to 39:43 at half-time with a bucket from over eight meters out and a lay-up after snapping up an offensive rebound.

After the break, Schabacker began with Walde and center Andy Rico in the starting five. The former also drained his showpiece shot from midrange right away and then provoked an offensive foul by the visitors from Swabia. Dizdarevic then buried a bucket from outside to make it 52:53 and the encounter seemed as if it had finally tilted the BBC’s way. However, a string of poor decisions by Coburg handed the momentum back to Ulm. First of all, Max von der Wippel committed his fourth personal foul and a little later Head Coach Schabacker was punished with a technical foul for complaining. OrangeAcademy Ulm ended the third period by producing a run of eight points without reply to surge 52:61 in front.

The final period began promisingly for the BBC: Shooting guard Kevin Franceschi finally drained his first three and Walde was fouled while scoring (58:61 in the 32nd minute). Yet the team of Finnish Head Coach Daniel Jansson always found the right answer, whereas the home side’s shooting percentage from the floor remained at a below-average 38. In particular the former youth international Till Pape permanently caused problems for Coburg’s defense and he finished up with a hefty haul of 24 points and eight rebounds on the stat sheet. As a result, he helped his team secure its first victory after five losses and also prevented BBC COBURG from consolidating its position further in the upper part of the table.
