BBL Cup: Bamberg surprise with 80:64 at Hamburg Towers

Hamburg, 10-15-2023

After the two defeats at the start of the Bundesliga, the Bamberg Baskets have probably found their way back on track thanks to the almost two-week break and intensive training. In the round of 16 of the BBL Cup, coach Oren Amiel's team deservedly won 80:64 against the Hamburg Towers.

Two things were particularly remarkable about the victory in the Hanseatic city: firstly, Oren Amiel's team was not behind for a single second of the game. Above all, the change in the offence, to no longer let Trey Woodbury do most of the playmaking, but to profit from passes as a shooting guard, worked according to plan. Woodbury was the top scorer with 21 points, had a strong shooting percentage of 75 percent, nine of the twelve throws landed in the basket. Already in the first quarter it was obvious that coach Oren Amiel had used the time since the last game for a lot of training of the defence work. The home side only scored 14 points against Bamberg in the first quarter, and Bamberg could have led by more than 22:14. Even the 0:9 run in the second quarter, when Hamburg reduced the score to 30:26, did not upset the Bamberg team. The strong centre Filip Stanic and Woodbury regained the double-digit lead, 44:34 at half-time.

Hamburg started better after the break, shortened the lead once again to 52:47 - this time it was Adrian Nelson and Kevin Wohlrath who saved the lead after the third quarter. In the final quarter, Bamberg gave the Hanseatic League no chance and pulled away to 19 points. The only blemish on the convincing cup success: 22 ball losses were still too many, but Hamburg could not take advantage of them.

Oren Amiel (Head Coach Bamberg Baskets): "I had the feeling that we trained very well for a fortnight and worked really hard. So we were confident that we could put in a good performance. It paid off. We were better defensively today, but I wasn't happy with everything on the offensive. But we kept the energy up and countered well when Hamburg came back."

On Sunday, 22 October 2023, the Bamberg Baskets will also be looking to celebrate their first win in the Easycredit BBL from 3.30 pm when the Amiel team takes on last-place Syntainics MBC away from home.
