Christian Engelhart wins the 24 Hours of Daytona in spectacular fashion

Daytona, 01-27-2019

With an impressive final offensive in the 24 Hours of Daytona, Christian Engelhart captured a prestigious victory in the classic endurance race in Florida for Lamborghini and the GRT Grasser Racing Team. He and his teammates Mirko Bortolotti, Rolf Ineichen and Rik Breukers were involved in several tough tussles with the competition before finally capturing top spot on the rostrum.

An endurance race can hardly be more exciting and unpredictable. This year’s 24 Hours of Daytona was a nerve-racking show that was influenced not only by what happened on the track, but above all by the incalculable caprices of the weather. At the end, Christian was able to give a demonstration of his experience and class in the rain – and win the legendary endurance race for his GRT Grasser Racing Team with a spectacular comeback. The Bavarian pilot in his new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo finished top of his class after 561 laps.

In a race, which was impacted by heavy downpours and two lengthy interruptions, Christian and his teammates maintained an overview of all that was going on and at the end Christian kept his nerves to defy the extreme weather conditions. In the final phase of the race, he moved up from ninth to first in the fiercely contested GTD class. With just two hours to go before its scheduled end, the race was interrupted for a second time due to heavy rain – a first in the history of this classic race. Finally, after 23:50 hours, the stewards decided against resuming the race.

“It’s a dream come true for me on my fifth start at Daytona. The race itself was an emotional rollercoaster. At the end, all you could do was try and cope with the extreme weather conditions as best possible. We managed to do that well. I’m so happy for the team. They’re like a family to me. In the final stint I wasn’t even aware that we were already in first place. I simply gave my all to move up through the field. The win was very emotional and, of course, a successful baptism for the new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo. We’re very proud that all of us have achieved this victory together.”
