Erlangen knocked out of the cup

Erlangen/Nuremberg, 10-17-2017

The team of Head Coach Tobias Wannenmacher only had little time to analyze what had happened in Eastern Westphalia after the game on Sunday afternoon. Yet the players around Johannes Sellin, who was back in the squad for the first time, seemed to have done that successfully. HCE was much improved in defense and operated with greater resolve and purpose. In particular Gorazd Skof between Erlangen’s posts turned in another impressive display, with the result that the home side was able to keep the last-sixteen encounter up for grabs until midway through the first half. After that, the reigning EHF Cup champions managed to exploit its opponents’ mistakes and pull away. HC Erlangen found the right reply on two occasions and was able to tie the scores in the space of ten minutes after trailing by four goals. Both teams thus went in at half-time on level terms (14:14).

After the break, HC Erlangen managed to take the lead for the first and only time on this Tuesday evening. In the ensuing minutes, Marcel Schiller kept on finding gaps in Erlangen’s covering and FRISCH AUF! Göppingen pulled away again. Yet HC Erlangen struck back again, although it was no longer able to draw level. HC Erlangen was thus knocked out of the DHB Cup by Göppingen by the wafer-thin margin of 27:28 and can now focus on the next task ahead of it in Leipzig on Sunday.

Tobias Wannenmacher commented: “We were much better in a number of things we discussed in the past hours. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite manage to get back to winning ways.”
