The stage was set for a great evening of handball. 5,176 spectators had come to the Nürnberger Versicherung Arena on Saturday to cheer their HC Erlangen on one last time before the new year. The team of Head Coach Frank Bergemann got off to a decent start and was able to keep on equalizing when the first-ever German Champions League winners went ahead. Until ten minutes before half-time, the league newcomers from Franconia also looked like they would give the SC Magdeburg a run for its money on its own turf. However, the home side from Saxony-Anhalt opened up a crucial gap just before the break and went in at half-time leading by 6 goals.

In the second half, the team of Head Coach Geir Sveinsson left no one in any doubt that it would take the two points home with it. A strong scoring percentage from the wings and a goalkeeper in fine fettle ultimately decided the encounter in Magdeburg’s favor. However, HC Erlangen’s players did not let their heads drop and produced a thrilling fight for the fans, who had turned up all in black to celebrate “Black Night.” SC Magdeburg finally ran out deserved winners and will next face Bergische HC at home on Tuesday, a side HC Erlangen will come up against on Boxing Day.
