FIBA Europe Cup: Brose Bamberg wins in Oren Amiel's birthplace

Kfar Blum, 10-19-2022

Second win in second away game! Despite long travel hardships, Brose Bamberg can win 98-86 at Hapoel Galil Elion in Kfar Blum, Israel. With a strong last quarter, Oren Amiel's team made the game clear.

For Bamberg's coaches Oren Amiel and Gabriel Chachashvili the game against Hapoel Galil was something very special. The center played for Elion in the last two seasons, head coach Amiel was even born and raised in Kfar Blum and learned the sport from scratch there: professional, assistant coach, head coach. But Oren Amiel was not at all pleased that his Bamberg boys gave the Israelis so many "gifts" in the first half. In the attack, the guests played respectably, the distance throw fell well with four three-pointers in the first quarter. But since Bamberg did not defend hard at the back, the home side scored in every attack, despite leading 6:1 and 23:19, the score was 29:29 after ten minutes. Two threes by the hosts let Bamberg chase a 31:37, until the break Bamberg reduced to 48:52 thanks to a layup by Vaidas Kariniauskas.

Oren Amiel's halftime speech had a lasting impression on his team: again and again, the Bambergers fought for the ball in the back and finished safely in front. Top scorer Christian Sengfelder hit two three-pointers to equalize the score at 59:59, and Spencer Reaves took the long-range shot for a 68:67 lead after the third quarter. In the final period, two bench players went all out: first Spencer Reaves nailed two of his total of four three-pointers for a 76-67 lead, Kevin Wohlrath followed with ten points through two lay-ups and two three-pointers. The 30:19 in the final quarter made it a safe away win in the end.

Oren Amiel (Head Coach Brose Bamberg): "I expected our first half to be a bit sleepy because of the travel and all the circumstances. We improved our defense and rebounding in the second half. This allowed us to win the ball a few times in the back and score nice points in the front. I'm pleased that the guys stepped up in the second half, were more cohesive defensively and got us the win."

On Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, Brose Bamberg will look to land its first win in the easycredit Basketball Bundesliga away at MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. Jump in the Brose Arena is at 6 p.m.
