medi bayreuth defeats BG Göttingen by 101:66 on the road

Before the game, not only the 3,146 spectators in the packed Sparkassen Arena would have thought it extremely unlikely that the encounter between BG Göttingen and medi bayreuth on the 25th matchday of the easyCredit German Basketball League would be decided by half-time. However, the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner produced an almost perfect performance in the first two periods and was already leading invincibly by 60:29 at the break. The Heroes Of Tomorrow ended up winning by 101:66 and so were able to boisterously celebrate their eighth win on the road this season together with the 100 Bayreuth fans who had made the journey.

The two teams were evenly matched only in the first three minutes. Nate Linhart & Co. then stepped up several gears and pulled away from the Violets, who were not able to put up any resistance to a resolute Bayreuth side. medi bayreuth put its game plan into action with extreme focus, exploited its strengths in offensive without virtually any exception, and so managed to record a high shooting percentage. Since it also produced an extremely alert performance in defense, it was able to open up a 41-point gap at one stage and chalk up an impressive away win in the end.

Thanks to the win in Lower Saxony, the Heroes Of Tomorrow were also able to increase the gap between them and their rivals from Bonn (69:87 against Ulm) and Oldenburg (62:83 against Bamberg) on this matchday in the struggle for fourth place in the table. The 101 points on the road are a new record for medi bayreuth since it gained promotion again. It had already broken its record with 100 points in the game at GIESSEN 46ers on the 6th matchday. And De’Mon Brooks also chalked up a new personal best by scoring 23 points.

Brief summary of the encounter

Both teams started off in focused fashion and were tied after three minutes. However, when the home side went 8:6 ahead through Mathis Mönninghoff in the 4th minute, it was to be the last time it would lead in the encounter, since medi proceeded to produce its first run. Driven on by Trey Lewis and Nate Linhart, it surged 17:8 ahead after just under six minutes. The Heroes Of Tomorrow did not slacken their grip and kept on stretching their lead. Trey Lewis scored his points 11, 12 and 13 with a bucket from beyond the arc, then De’Mon Brooks made it 29:15 at the end of the first period.

Bayreuth also ticked over smoothly in the second quarter, moved the ball well, scored impressively carved-out points and pulled away by 36:15 in the 12th minute. The gap continued to grow. Steve Wachalski made it 45:20 from downtown in the 15th minute and Andreas Seiferth put his side 51:22 in front just under two minutes later. Yet the Heroes Of Tomorrow had not had enough and kept on scoring uncompromisingly. Kyan Anderson drained a three and, after two buckets in succession by Assem Marei, the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner went in at half-time leading by 60:29.

After the break, medi bayreuth picked up right where it had left off at the end of the first half. The second half began with threes by De’Mon Brooks and Nate Linhart and after that it seemed that every action by Bayreuth was crowned with success. Whether below the baskets (Assem Marei, 70:35 in the 24th minute) or from outside (Kyan Anderson, 77:41 in the 26th minute) – just about every shot seemed to end up in Göttingen’s hoop. There were also spectacular actions, such as Nate Linhart’s textbook alley-oop pass to set up De’Mon Brooks (79:41 in the 26th minute). The highest lead of the encounter came when Trey Lewis drained one of Bayreuth’s ten threes to make it 82:41 in the 27th minute.

medi bayreuth remained focused in the final period. Raoul Korner used the clear lead to give Marius Adler and Moritz Trieb a few minutes on court. Marius Adler seized his opportunity clinically to get his name on the scoresheet with a three to make it 99:64 with 46 seconds left on the clock. Trey Lewis, Bayreuth’s top scorer so far this season, then chalked up points 100 and 101 to the jubilation of the away fans.
