medi Bayreuth loses 84:94 in Bonn

Bonn, 10-14-2018

medi Bayreuth has again failed to win on the road at Telekom Baskets Bonn at its sixth attempt in a row. The team of Head Coach Raoul Korner lost by 84:94 (46:54) on the 3rd matchday in the easyCredit German Basketball League on Sunday evening.

In front of 5,010 spectators in the Telekom Dome, the home side from the Rhineland was able to carve out a comfortable lead after the first period and then held on to it until the final quarter thanks to its far superior rebounding. An incredible power-packed spell in the form of a run of 20 points without reply in just 3:13 minutes even put medi Bayreuth back in front by 80:79 with 4:04 minutes remaining. However, Bonn’s best player, Josh Mayo, took his team’s fate into his own hands in crunch time to lead Telekom Baskets to what was ultimately a deserved win.

An evenly poised opening spell ensued with De’Mon Brooks in the starting five. However, it became clear from the fourth minute on that Bonn is the more well-tuned team at this early stage of the season. Whereas the side of Head Coach Raoul Korner had difficulties in offense, Bonn kept on scoring easy points with a starting formation that was in fine form. If its players were not successful at the first bite of the cherry, they were repeatedly able to create a second or even third chance to shoot thanks to their overwhelming superiority in rebounding throughout the encounter.

That dominance continued unbroken in the second period. The strong Josh Mayo, as well as Charles Jackson and Ra’Shad James, permanently posed problems for Bayreuth’s defense. It was above all Steve Wachalski and Andreas Seiferth who kept medi Bayreuth within striking distance despite these difficulties. However, it felt as if Bonn’s superiority was even greater than the eight-point lead it took in at half-time (54:46).

Bayreuth improved somewhat in defense after the break and was able to keep Telekom Baskets down to 18 points in the third period. However, its better defending was offset by the fact that it became slacker in offense, hardly managing to string together two successful attacks in a row.

There were no indications that Bayreuth might turn the game around at the start of the final quarter. Bonn was able to pull 79:60 ahead at one stage. Suddenly Bayreuth woke up, exploited the space available to it and uncompromisingly punished every mistake Bonn made. An incredible 20:0 run, which was finished by bucket from outside by Gregor Hrovat, even gave it the lead again with four minutes left. However, Bonn’s key players wrested control again and so there was no happy end for medi Bayreuth after all.
