Bayreuth

medi bayreuth turns the game against Oldenburg around to win 80:71

Bayreuth, 11-13-2016

In front of a sold-out arena, the Heroes Of Tomorrow also defeated EWE Baskets Oldenburg to chalk up another victory in their ninth game of the season. It was already the eighth win in a row for medi bayreuth, who remains third in the table.

However, it needed a true power-packed performance to finally force the other side from Lower Saxony to its knees and run out winners by 80:71 (35:47). The visitors with the former Bayreuth player and new father Brian Qvale dominated the first half and led by 13 points shortly before the break. Injected with fresh motivation by Head Coach Raoul Korner, however, medi came out stronger in the second half and once more played out of its skin. From the 22nd minute on, Bayreuth was suddenly wide awake and played with greater resolve and more energy. The fans in the Oberfrankenhalle also felt that energy, got even more behind their side and so helped it raise its game and return to its familiar strength. Belief and confidence were suddenly visible in the actions of the Heroes Of Tomorrow on court. When Bastian Doreth put his team ahead again in the 33rd minute (63:61), the tide finally began to turn the way of medi bayreuth.

Brief summary of the encounter

Bayreuth against Oldenburg, third against seventh, the two best teams to date from the three-point line – the facts promised a thrilling and also hard-fought game and it lived up to expectations. The encounter was evenly poised until Nate Linhart made it 11:11 in the 6th minute. Brian Qvale and Vaughn Duggins then produced a 6:0 run for EWE Baskets to help it open up a gap for the first time. A three by Wachalski and two buckets from Trey Lewis got medi back into the game (23:24 in the 13th minute). The encounter remained exciting until Oldenburg got the momentum back on its side with a bucket from beyond the arc by Rickey Paulding (28:33 in the 16th minute). Andreas Seiferth reduced the gap, but the visitors produced a run of 9 of points without reply to go in 47:35 in front at the break.

After strong words in the half-time talk, the Heroes Of Tomorrow were like a completely changed team when they came back on court. Steve Wachalski scored again from downtown to make it 40:48 in the 23rd minute – a clear wake-up call for his side. Oldenburg did not score as reliably as in the first half – instead, it was medi’s shots that dropped. Bastian Doreth with a three and Nate Linhart cut the gap to 50:54 in the 28th minute and Doreth even made it 56:58 shortly before the end of the period to the cheers of the crowd. In the final quarter, the visitors kept in front with buckets from outside by Philipp Schwethelm and Rickey Paulding, but medi did not give up. The game was then turned on its head from the foul line: After a foul by Frantz Massenat, Trey Lewis was awarded three free throws and drained all of them securely (68:64 in the 35th minute). Kyan Anderson and Assem Marei added further points, after which De’Mon Brooks slammed in a ripping dunk on a fast break to make it 74:66 in the 37th minute. The injury-weakened visitors were not able to put up any more resistance in the closing spell as medi went on to notch up its eighth straight win.
