Nothing to gain in the Wolfsbau: medi bayreuth has to admit defeat to SYNTAINICS MBC

Braunschweig, 11-26-2022

The momentum from the first games is now completely gone. After the unfortunate home defeat on the last BBL matchday against Braunschweig, medi bayreuth now also had to admit defeat at SYNTAINICS MBC on the 8th matchday in the easyCredit BBL.

From the start, the hosts pressed hard and seemed to surprise medi bayreuth. While the Wolves moved quickly and agilely to the basket, the Bayreuth side seemed a little unstructured at first, so that Head Coach Lars Masell called a timeout after just three minutes of play. Nevertheless, the MBC continued to succeed in what medi could not, namely bringing the ball forward quickly and then switching back to defense in transition. Since medi's physicality under the baskets also left something to be desired, the Wolves grabbed more rebounds, so that our team had to go into the first quarter break with an 18:23 deficit.

While Igor Jovovic's team carried the ball forward with confidence, created good throws and performed in a team-serving manner, medi lacked structure, especially on the offensive end, which contributed to the fact that hardly any plays could be completed and it often remained with individual actions. With a halftime score of 40:53, the Bayreuth team went into the dressing room for a talk.

After the change of ends, the medi players seemed to have remembered their virtues and were accordingly more agile under the basket, so that more rebounds could be grabbed and the deficit had melted down to six points shortly before the end of the third quarter. The next action in the game was emblematic: medi in possession of the ball, but instead of reducing the deficit to four or even three points, Ahmed Hill threw the leather into the hands of the opponent. MBC punished this with a successful three-point shot and went into the final period with a 76:67 lead.

Here, too, medi had another chance to turn the game around, but here, too, they kept getting in their own way. In addition, the Wolves took advantage of every mistake. Since medi's easy throws didn't find the target either, they lost the A9 derby with 83:96 and gave the MBC its first and deserved home win of the season.

Lars Masell (Head Coach medi bayreuth):

"SYNTAINICS MBC clearly dominated us today. We have to start to stop our individual mistakes, offensively and defensively. Today it was mainly due to the defense. We scored 83 points ourselves, but allowed 96 points, which was nothing today defensively. Everything we trained for during the week and everything we planned for today, we missed. That's just not good enough."

In the next game, our guys are again in demand away from home. The task next weekend will not be any easier, quite the opposite: In the quarterfinals of the Magenta Sport BBL Cup, we will meet the EuroLeague participants, FC Bayern Munich Basketball, on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. in the Audi Dome.
