US Open: Second place for Krawietz/Pütz

New York, 09-07-2024

The German Davis Cup players Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz narrowly missed out on their first joint Grand Slam title after an impressive tournament performance.

After 1:34 hours, Krawietz and Pütz, seeded tenth in New York, lost 4:6, 6:7 to the Australian duo Purcell and Thompson, who were seeded seventh.

In the first set, the Wimbledon finalists Purcell and Thompson proved to have the stronger nerves and won the round 6:4.

In the second set, the Australians also managed the first break to make it 3:2, but Krawietz and Pütz put up a strong fight - in the decisive tie-break, however, the two Germans were unable to capitalize on their 3:1 lead and lost the chance of a third set 4:7. Nevertheless, second place at the US Open is an impressive performance that underlines the team's great development.

“We had a lot of fun playing on Arthur Ashe (Center Court in New York) for the first time, that was something very special,” said Krawietz, thanking the numerous spectators and his supporters.

“The first joint appearance in a Grand Slam final by Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz is a great success for German tennis, which unfortunately did not come to a crowning conclusion with the defeat in the final. We are proud that with “KraPütz” we have one of the best doubles teams in the world in Germany. We hope that they will be able to maintain their great form in the group phase of the Davis Cup in China despite the hardships of traveling,” said DTB President Dietloff von Arnim.

In China, the German DTB team will face Slovakia tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10th.
