Basketball Bundesliga: medi bayreuth loses to Oldenburg

Bayreuth, 03-23-2022

Injuries and Corona illnesses have currently taken away the rhythm of the team around captain Bastian Doreth, which was also missing in the 71-74 home defeat against the Lower Saxons. In a tight final phase, the guests were able to win the important victory in the relegation battle. For medi bayreuth, on the other hand, it was the fourth defeat in a row, which means that the team remains winless after the international break and before the 83rd Upper Franconian derby.

The game was opened by points from today's top scorer, Max Heidegger. However, these points were to remain the only ones for the Lower Saxons for four minutes, because the Bayreuth team had the guests well under control and only allowed difficult throws, so that medi was in the lead after three minutes with an 8:0 run. Then, however, Heidegger again opened the chase and the hosts' lead melted down to 18:12 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second period, too, little changed in the course of the game. The Oldenburg team continued to score at a high percentage. The guests pulled away point by point and with a 7:0 run took the highest lead so far (34:27), which they still held at half-time with 39:33.

Thanks to an 11:0 run, Oldenburg extended their lead to 50:39 directly after the change of ends. However, Head Coach Raoul Korner's boys fought their way back into the game with a 13:0 run, initiated by two free throws and completed by a four-point play by Terry Allen. From then on, it was a game of equals. The EWE Baskets went into the last quarter with a narrow 55:54 lead.

In the final period, neither team managed to pull away decisively. The hosts equalised again 35 seconds before the end of the game with two successful free throws by Sacar Anim. However, Alen Pjanic scored from beyond the 6.75-metre line 18 seconds before the end and forced medi Heach coach Raoul Korner to call a time-out. After two quick points by Martynas Sajus to make it 71-72, Bayreuth then brought Rickey Paulding to the free-throw line, who scored twice to increase the lead to three points. Medi Bayreuth lost to EWE Baskets Oldenburg by a narrow 71-74 margin.

"In the end, you notice that we are not running on all cylinders. You can see that especially in our quotas. We actually get the shots we want, but don't convert them. That gives the opponent the chance to get going. In the end, Oldenburg hit a few big shots that we just didn't hit," Raoul Korner (Head Coach medi bayreuth).

The match between medi bayreuth and Brose Bamberg is scheduled for next Saturday, 26.03.2022, in the Oberfrankenhalle.
