Sold-out Oberfrankenhalle pushes medi bayreuth to derby win against Brose Bamberg

Bayreuth, 12-26-2022

Home sweet home! On the 11th matchday in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga, medi bayreuth clinched its third win of the season and of course on its own floor. With the great support of a sold-out Oberfrankenhalle with 3,400 spectators, the Bayreuth team defeated Brose Bamberg 92-86 on Christmas Day and thus drew level with their Upper Franconian rivals in the standings after victories.

Our team looked highly concentrated from the jump and quickly demonstrated that they wanted to finally put an end to the long negative streak. Neither of the two teams could really pull away at first and since Head Coach Lars Masell immediately put an end to Bamberg's small run to a 13:11 lead by calling a timeout, it remained a hard-fought duel.

Also in the second game unit it remained a duel, which deserved the name derby. Whenever the feeling arose that the opponent could have pulled away more clearly, our team came back into the game and was even able to take the lead again in the 16th minute of play. However, as in the first quarter, the Bamberg team was more composed and regained the lead, which they were able to extend to six points by the end of the first half.

Medi got off to the better start in the second half and was able to cut the deficit to one point in the 23rd minute. However, the Bayreuth team was by no means intimidated by this and regained the lead shortly before the end of the third quarter. And this time, the better finish belonged to our team, which built a four-point lead by the end of the quarter.

It was now up to medi to save the lead from the third period and that's exactly what our team managed to do. Supported by a loud, sold-out crowd in Oberfrankenhölle, they were largely convincing offensively this time and even managed to pull away to eleven points. Nevertheless, it remained a nail-biter until the end. Bamberg once again threw everything into the scales and reduced the deficit point by point. But this time it was Brandon Childress, with a heavy mid-range shot and safe free throws, who secured the long-awaited victory for our team in the 84th Upper Franconian derby.

Lars Masell (Head Coach medi bayreuth):

"We are happy that we finally got a win. A big praise to my team, because after such a phase it is by no means easy to perform like this here and play cold-blooded offensively. Hats off!"

It continues blow by blow for our team, because already next Thursday the next home game for medi bayreuth is on the agenda. Only seven days after the last encounter, the violets of BG Göttingen now come to Bayreuth in the Oberfrankenhalle. Jump to the game of the 12th matchday is at 7:00 pm.
