BBC Coburg: Decimated Coburg team loses in Ulm
Coburg suffered a narrow 71-76 defeat at OrangeAcademy Ulm in the top match of ProB South, but put in an impressive performance despite a severely depleted squad.
Without four key players, Coburg got off to a flying start, leading 23:9 after a strong first quarter and keeping Ulm at bay until the middle of the second quarter. However, an 11:0 run by the hosts brought the score level at halftime.
After the break, both teams hit their first three-pointers, with Coburg narrowly maintaining the lead and going into the final quarter 59:57 ahead. In an increasingly competitive game, the lead changed hands several times. With a minute and a half to go, Coburg was still ahead 71-70, but missed the chance to pull away. Ulm took advantage of two Coburg turnovers and decided the game at the free throw line.
Despite the defeat, coach Patrick Seidel praised his team's tremendous effort, team spirit, and defensive intensity. The top scorers were Dylan Fasoyiro with 21 and Darius Dawson with 19 points. Coburg also lost its lead in the standings as a result of the defeat, but put in a performance that deserves great respect given the many absences.
Until next Sunday (January 11), the BBC will need to recharge its batteries as best it can in order to put up a similar fight against the Ahorn Camp Baskets from Speyer in its first home game of the new year.
