Basketball Bundesliga: Bamberg Baskets get first Bundesliga win of the season

Weißenfels, 10-22-2023

Here it is at last, the first Bundesliga win of the season! Coach Oren Amiel's team won 94:86 away at Mitteldeutscher BC in Weißenfels and climbed to 13th place in the table.

Bamberg, like Weißenfels still without a win in the Bundesliga season, started nervously and quickly had to chase a 3:11 deficit. Zach Copeland got Bamberg back on track with seven points and reduced the deficit to 13:16. Israeli coach Oren Amiel brought centre EJ Onu back into the game - and from then on things went better for Bamberg. Onu started a 10:0 Bamberg run with a basket, which Kevin Wohlrath completed with a three-pointer for the first lead at the end of the quarter. With a strong performance in the second quarter, Bamberg extended the lead to 15 points. The Amiel boys were convincing with their beautiful passing game and had ten assists, five three-pointers and their best offensive quarter of the season so far with 33 points.

After the change of ends, Onu, Justin Gray and Adrian Nelson initially increased the lead to 65:45, but then the MBC reared its head, became better on defence and prevented the Bamberg team from scoring so easily. The consequence: seven ball losses in quarter three, the lead melted down to 12 points. In the middle of the fourth quarter, the game even threatened to tip over. But the top scorers Zach Copeland, Justin Gray and the strong Trey Woodbury showed no nervousness and hit three threes in a row, 90:81 two minutes before the end, the decision for Bamberg.

Oren Amiel (Headcoach Bamberg Baskets): "There are so many things going on around me, so I'm very thankful that all the other coaches, Enzo and Thommy support me, they all take a lot of responsibility. I still find it very difficult to talk about basketball at the moment. Somehow we are all in this situation together and winning is always a good feeling. Our first half was very good, plus it's always good to see our fans happy after a win."

On Friday, 27 October, the Bamberg Baskets finally have their first home game of the season coming up: starting at 8 pm, they host EWE Baskets Oldenburg - the team from Lower Saxony is currently fifth in the table with a 3:1 winning record.
