Bamberg
Basketball Bundesliga: Brose Bamberg plays well against Bayern, but loses
Unfortunately, the boys from Brose Bamberg did not reward themselves for this strong performance: against FC Bayern Munich it was a 87:94 home defeat in front of 6,150 spectators, but in the last quarter the Amiel men were able to catch up from a 16-point deficit and were about to turn the game around. But at 79:84, Bamberg missed three times and Bayern secured victory.
For the first time since 2019, the Brose Arena was completely sold out. Five distance shots in just seven attempts – thanks to Kevin Wohlrath, Young, Miller and Bohačík it was only 26:30 after ten minutes. Spencer Reaves and Jaromír Bohačík threw Bamberg to a point, but Bamberg didn't take the lead. On the contrary: the hosts - and loudly also the spectators - quarreled with the referees, who felt like whistling every close decision for the guests.
Bamberg came out strong with three times three: first top scorer Patrick Miller sank a layup despite a foul and the bonus free throw for a three-point game, then Solomon Young and Christian Sengfelder each slammed a three in for Bayern – only 52 :53. But again and again, even with the 57:58 after a dunking by Gabriel Chachashvili and Jaromír Bohačík's three to make it 60:61, Bamberg couldn't turn the game around. Once again, Bamberg allowed themselves to be distracted by the poor refereeing, Gabriel Chachashvili even had to take a shower with the fifth foul 12 minutes before the end, two of them in one scene. Bayern exploited this mercilessly and within five minutes at the beginning of the quarter they were 64:80. But Bamberg didn't give up - the three players with the most points, Miller, Young and Bohačík, took matters into their own hands and scored, Sengfelder added his second three and Heckmann put up a layup to make it 15:4 and 79:84.
Oren Amiel (head coach Brose Bamberg): "Today we had the strongest opponent imaginable: they have extreme talent, extreme physique, strong mindset. We were able to learn a lot today, that's always important. Nevertheless: we kept up well over long stretches of the game.”
On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Brose Bamberg wants to take revenge for the 80:82 home defeat by the Romanians from CSM CSU Oradea and defend the lead in Group H of the FIBA Europe Cup from 6 p.m.
