Basketball: medi bayreuth loses 71:94 at home to second-placed Bonn

Bayreuth , 01-29-2023

medi bayreuth ended the first half of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga with a home defeat. In front of 2,543 spectators in the Oberfrankenhalle, the Bayreuth team lost to the Telekom Baskets Bonn on Sunday afternoon with 71:94. After a good first half, the Bayreuth team was literally overrun by the Rhinelanders in the third quarter with 16:37. medi showed character again in the last quarter, but in the end the Bonn team deserved to win.

After a fast and effective start of the Bonn team, medi got better and better into the game and could not only equalize after five minutes with a 6:0 run, but even take the lead with a successful three-point shot by Kay Bruhnke. However, the guests were not at all impressed by this, quite the opposite! While the Bayreuthers didn't want to score any more baskets for a while, Head Coach Tuomas Iisalo's team kept on scoring, so that medi's deficit quickly reached double digits and the fans already feared worse.

Also in the second period medi was fully in the game. The Bonners stuck to their energetic full-court defense, which did not allow medi to score easy points, but due to good team play they scored effectively from the outside again and again and did not neglect the move to the basket. From then on, the guests took the lead on the court again and could even pull away to eleven points in the 19th minute of the game. However, two basket successes by Jackson Rowe and Kalif Young pushed the deficit back below the psychological 10-point mark at the break.

Head coach Tuomas Iisalo's team pulled ahead point by point and was even ahead by twenty points in the 27th minute. Nevertheless, the medi players did not give up at all and forced the Bonners to lose the ball again and again. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize on these losses. Even supposedly easy basket shots or dunks did not find their target, so that the quarter was lost with 16:37. At the end of the third period, the team was already trailing by thirty points, 49:79.

With the clear lead behind them, the Bonners now switched down a gear. medi continued to fight and was able to halve the deficit to 69:84. But that was all, because the team of Head Coach Tuomas Iisalo kept the opponent at a distance in an experienced and cool manner and played the victory over time, which was completely deserved.

Lars Masell (Head Coach medi bayreuth):

"Congratulations to Bonn on the victory and the successful season they are playing so far. We handled the current personnel situation well. Brandon was obviously out, Basti and Kay were also not 100% fit. But we got a lot out of the circumstances we are in, so I can be quite proud of the guys and now our full focus is on ratiopharm ulm."

Exactly in one week, it's back to business for medi. Guest on the 19th matchday is then ratiopharm ulm. Jump in the Oberfrankenhalle is at 18:00 clock.
