The decline continues and Bayreuth again came away empty-handed from a game on the road – even against fellow strugglers. Although Bayreuth did have a higher free throw percentage and won the final period, Mitteldeutscher BC were otherwise better in all departments: the field goal percentage, rebounds and assists. As a result, the Weißenfels Wolves, who had likewise gone six games without a victory, won in the end by the margin of 65:73 (32:40). It was the seventh defeat in a row for Michael Koch’s team. Bayreuth’s Head Coach was naturally peeved after the game, but congratulated the MBC on its deserved success. Koch criticized the fact that his team again woke up too late: “In our current situation, you have to play with the intensity we showed at the end over a longer stretch. The MBC managed to do that today and so deservedly won.”

The story of the game is quickly told. Bayreuth trailed from the outset, apart from when it led 7:6 through David Brembly in the 5th minute and 13:12 through Brandon Bowman in the 7th. The deficit was modest to begin with, but stretched to 36:28 after a bucket from beyond the arc by Malte Schwarz in the 17th minute and grew to eight points by the break. A further three, this time by Patrick Richard, put the Wolves 13 points ahead (47:34 in the 24th minute). And that gap grew as the prominent shooting guard again scored from outside (55:39 in the 18th minute). It was not until midway through the final period that the team from Upper Franconia got back into contention thanks to better play in offense and several defensive rebounds, but it was not able to cut the gap to below five points at any time.

Michael Koch commented: “Both teams were uptight. The MBC was able to shed its nervousness sooner and players with greater intensity than we did at the start of the game. It then built a wide lead. It was only then that my team woke up and played with the energy and fight we needed to try and turn the game around. We gave our all to do that in the final ten minutes and closed the gap a little. In our current situation, you have to play with the intensity we showed at the end over a longer stretch. The MBC managed to do that today and so deservedly won.”
