s. Oliver Würzburg loses 71:78 to Basketball Lions Braunschweig

Würzburg, 11-10-2018

After four wins in a row, s.Oliver Würzburg has suffered a defeat again on the seventh matchday of the easyCredit German Basketball League: In a tight encounter in the s.Oliver Arena against Basketball Lions Braunschweig, the home side failed to capitalize on too many chances in the second half and so finally lost 71:78. The club from Lower Saxony was able to capture a decisive lead thanks to seven buckets from downtown in the third period.

Braunschweig’s clear victory against Brose Bamberg last Sunday was ample warning that a tough game at home was in store for s.Oliver Würzburg. And so the home side began the encounter with the necessary focus: Unlike in the home game against the Romanian champions CSM CSU Oradea on Wednesday, it side was wide awake from the very first second and was 6:0 ahead in the 3rd minute thanks to points from Cameron Wells and two jump shots by Skyler Bowlin. The first signs of resistance from the visitors came with a three by DeAndre Landsdowne and a lay-up with a bonus free throw from Scott Eatherton to quickly tie the scores. The visitors were now in the game and, buoyed with confidence after their home win against Bamberg, produced a run of 12 points without reply when trailing 8:6 to surge 8:18 in front in the 9th minute. The home side was able to limit the damage thanks to two buckets from beyond the arc by captain Kresimir Loncar and Jordan Hulls before the end of the first period, which ended 14:21.

In the opening spell of the second quarter, it was then in particular Johannes Richter who quickly got the home side back into contention with successful actions. He opened the scoring in the second period and tied the scores at 23:23 in the 13th minute. The game remained similarly tight up to the break, albeit with slight advantages for Würzburg, who was ahead going in at half-time.

However, the 43:40 lead did not last long in the third quarter. The first six attempted threes by the Lions hit their mark, enabling them to take a double-digit lead (47:57) again at one stage, and the third period ended with s.Oliver Würzburg trailing by 57:63.

The club from Lower Franconia therefore had to stage another comeback in the final period, although this time it would not be crowned with success. It was able to reduce the deficit to four points on several occasions – for the last time when Perry Ellis made it 71:75 with 51.1 seconds remaining. And it repeatedly produced the necessary stops in defense and so had numerous chances in crunch time to narrow the gap. However, Brayon Blake drained the deciding jump shot plus a bonus free throw with 29.7 seconds remaining to make the final score 71:78 for Braunschweig.
