Brose Bamberg with second consecutive Euroleague victory

Bamberg, 2016-15-12

This victory is really good for the team! Four days after the Premier League defeat at the hands of ratiopharm Ulm, the Brose Bamberg team produced an outstanding performance to beat Anadolu Efes Istanbul 91:83. With this victory in the Nuremberg Arena in front of 8,200 spectators, the Trinchieri team has improved its position in the league table of the top European competition to 13 – and if Milan lose at Galatasaray tonight, Bamberg will gain the number 12 spot.

However, the basketball evening in Nuremberg began with shock news for the Bamberg fans: Elias Harris will be out indefinitely because of a bone edema in the knee that was operated on six weeks ago. Andrea Trinchieri’s players surprised in the first two minutes by two unexpected but successful three-point baskets from the Turkish team. Janis Strelnieks negated the 96-second 2:8 score with seven points in a row, after which Fabien Causeur made a layup, a free throw and a three-point basket to bring the home team a 15:12 lead. Nicolo Melli and Nikos Zisis increased this lead to 23:17 shortly before the end of the quarter, but the guests made a fast 8 points to lead once again. Anadolu then made four points to make the score 30:34. The exremely motivated Fabien Causeur was the man to watch. Playing against his longtime former coach Velimir Perasovic (now Istanbul), he broke through to the basket time and time again, inciting his teammates to pull out all the stops. It was thanks to his 18 points and seven from Darius Miller and Nikos Zisis that Bamberg went off at the break with a 48:41 lead.

The second half also saw “high-speed play” – but although Istanbul countered quickly, their finishing was often too hasty, so they missed many chances. The Bamberg team also played fast out of defense, but was more patient in its approach to the basket, always finding a teammate in a good position. Darius Miller made it 52:41, the first time Bamberg had led by ten points or more. Towards the end of the third quarter, the Turks cut the home team’s lead to 68:64, but Lucca Staiger came off the bench to make a three-pointer taking us into the final quarter with a 71:64 lead. The Trinchieri team came out strongly in the final quarter – with a strongly-committed defense and a lightning-fast attacking game, top scorer Fabien Causeur (28 points, his career best score in the Euroleague) once again increased the Brose team’s lead to nine points (78:69). Two and a half minutes before the end, Istanbul had clawed the lead back to 82:79, but in came Darius Miller (17 points) to make sure of the result – a layup, three of his seven rebounds, 88:81, game over. The outstanding Causeur also made a three-pointer right at the buzzer for a triumphant victory.

Head Coach Andrea Trinchieri commented: “That was a great game! At last we can say that we have actually won in Nuremberg. It was one of our best games. Efes is the most athletic team in the Euroleague, but we robbed them of their energy and that was the first key to victory. The second key was that apart from two or three minutes, our play was very consistent at the end of the first quarter and at the beginning of the second quarter. We played solidly throughout the entire game and moved the ball quickly. Lucca Staiger was a role model for us – he came into the game cold from the bench and still made a three-pointer as soon as he was on. These are very important things for a coach. Well done to every one of my team!”

On Saturday, December 17 at 8:30 pm, the Brose Bamberg team hosts the BBL Telekom Baskets from Bonn in the easycredit premier league. The Rhinelanders have reached fifth position in the table thanks to two consecutive wins, including a 95:83 over Bayern Munich, so they will be no pushovers for us!
