200 Years of the Landestheater Coburg – 2026/27 Anniversary Season with a New Concept

Coburg, 06-18-2026

The Coburg State Theater has unveiled its program for the 2026/27 season—and has fundamentally revised it once again in the wake of a change in leadership. Under the artistic direction of the new interim artistic director, Dr. Ulrich Peters, one central theme now takes center stage: the theater’s 200th anniversary.

On June 1, 1827, the theater was founded as the “Ducal Saxon Court Theater.” This special anniversary serves as the central theme of the upcoming season. The goal is to highlight the theater’s eventful history while connecting it to contemporary perspectives. The productions invite the audience to discover the Coburg State Theater from a new perspective.

A defining creative element of the anniversary season is its focus on the Romantic era, which played a central role at the time of the theater’s founding. Numerous productions take up this artistic approach and bridge the gap between the past and the present. In this way, the Landestheater Coburg successfully and impressively combines tradition and modernity. The anniversary year promises not only cultural highlights but also a shared experience for the entire region.

Special Highlights of the Season

Among the outstanding productions is Giuseppe Verdi’s opera *La traviata*, which impressively brings the musical world of the 19th century to the stage. Another highlight is Frank Wildhorn’s musical *The Count of Monte Cristo*, based on the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas. The work combines powerful emotions with a historical narrative, making it a perfect fit for the concept of the anniversary season.

Beyond these productions, visitors can look forward to a diverse program featuring a total of 18 premieres, including the world premiere of the musical “Caligari” in September 2026, as well as numerous plays, ballets, and concerts.

Theater Meets the City: Extraordinary Venues

A special feature of the season is the incorporation of extraordinary venues. Selected productions will be deliberately relocated to significant historical settings, including the Veste Coburg and the Ehrenburg. Productions such as “Elisabeth” in the Hofkirche or the theatrical walking tour “Royals” blend theater and city history in a unique way.

A Wide Range of Offers in the Anniversary Year

To mark the anniversary, the Landestheater Coburg is offering exclusive special promotions. Since June 18, 2026, a limited-edition anniversary card—available in a run of 200—has been on sale; for a one-time fee of 200 euros, visitors receive a 40 percent discount on all performances throughout the entire season. In addition, an anniversary gift certificate is available: For 200 euros, purchasers receive 220 euros in value.
