Basketball: Coburg defeats Speyer with offensive fireworks

Coburg, 12-17-2022

BBC Coburg ran hot in their sixth consecutive win in the BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProB. On Saturday afternoon, Coburg's basketball players defeated Ahorn Camp BIS Baskets Speyer 109-83 and played themselves into a frenzy offensively.

In the first half, captain Sven Lorber's team outscored the Palatinate team 39-21. From the bench, Adrian Worthy scored 14 points in just over five minutes. Worthy contributed a total of five goals from downtown to BBC Coburg's excellent three-point percentage on Saturday afternoon - 18 of 38 went in. Leon Bulic also proved accurate from beyond the line of demarcation. His triple to make it 15-9 moved visiting coach Carl Mbassa to call the first timeout after four and a half minutes. However, his team did not come back in the first quarter and everything fell for the home side.

Things went better for the Cathedral City team in the second quarter. The mad odds of the Coburg team returned to normal and Speyer sorted itself out and started to score more. Dejan Bruce and DJ Woodmore scored three goals from outside within a minute, which prompted BBC coach Miller to call a timeout. Coburg managed to keep the upper hand in the second despite the Palatinate team getting stronger. The second quarter also went to the BBC with 24:23, and at 63:44 it went into halftime.

Already in the last meetings Coburgs basketball players did not come well from the break and also this time the Upper Franconians were caught on the completely wrong foot. The comfortable 19-point lead at halftime melted down to seven points within a few minutes. Speyer's point guard Woodmore converted a three-pointer to make it 60:67 from the Palatinate's point of view. Before that, the home side clearly showed increasing nervousness about the dwindling lead. Now it was the young Milan Suput, who tore the BBC with a three-pointer from the deep sleep. With a total of 17 points, the 18-year-old BBC forward was also convincing. By the end of the passage, the Vestestäder stabilized and averted a change in the lead.

Things went like clockwork again in the final period. Center Leon Bulic turned it up a notch and scored eleven points in the fourth quarter. After scoring four points in a row, Coburg led 91-75 with five and a half minutes to go, a deficit that was too high for Speyer to compensate for. Coburg's basketball players simply had Bock and didn't stop shooting threes until the end. The begesiteren fans in the HUK-COBURG arena cheered at the end of the 109:83 victory in the penultimate home game of the year.

BBC Head Coach Jessie Miller was also fully satisfied. "I am very proud of the boys. The young players were ready to step up so we can be successful. In the third, there was a little bit of a lack of energy on the defensive end. It was also clear that Speyer was going to hit some shots," the U.S. native said after the game. She also liked her team's 28 assists. "That has something to do with trust for each other. We made good decisions and always found the right player in the right position."
