Basketball: Medi - Team loses after great fight

Oldenburg, 10-05-2022

It didn't take much for Medi Bayreuth to win their first away game of the season in the Basketball Bundesliga. In the end, however, the game at the Baskets Oldenburg on Wednesday evening was lost with 72:76.

The game fulfilled from the beginning the expectations that games against Oldenburg are led under the more combative than before. On both sides, the offensive forces had a hard time against aggressive defense, but Bayreuth initially found the better playful solutions with the more flexible attacks and recorded correspondingly higher scoring rates. The Oldenburg team initially scored mainly at the three-point line, but the distance shots did not fall. Thus the Medi - team dominated surprisingly clearly in the first quarter. Above all, the disqualifying foul against Baskets - Center Owen Klassen at the score of 7:12 remained unused. Kalif Young missed the two free throws and also the following possession brought nothing. Instead, DeWayne Russel shortened the gap to 10:12 with a three-pointer.

At the beginning of the second period, however, the guests actually led even more clearly. Young increased the lead to 27:14 with a goal from half distance and made himself the top scorer among the already eight Bayreuth basket shooters with his sixth point - proof of the good team play. The picture only changed when Oldenburg started hitting from the outside. Three threes in a row shortened the gap to 29:31, and with that the tasks for the Medi - defense became more diverse, which also made them more vulnerable under the basket. Thus, the Baskets came to 30 points in the second half after only 14 in the first.

Kalif Young (center medi bayreuth) said that:

"We should have put a lot more pressure on the rebound. Throughout the game, we gave away easy rebounds that definitely hurt us a lot. In addition, we also have to put a little more pressure on the ball. In the end, we got on the court, fought, but just should have done everything more intensely!"
