Defeat for Bamberg Baskets at the end of the season

Oldenburg, 05-12-2024

The 2023/24 basketball season has come to an end for Bamberg Baskets. The 84:107 defeat at EWE Baskets Oldenburg meant that Arne Woltmann's team was no longer able to catch up with tenth-placed Hamburg Towers and finished the season in eleventh place in the table.

The starting position was clear - Bamberg could only have slipped into the playoffs if it had won in Oldenburg and Hamburg Towers had lost at home. The visitors played a very decent first half and even led 23:16 shortly before the end of the first period. Oldenburg recaptured the lead with three threes in the space of two minutes and pulled 31:37 ahead after Woltmann's players missed a number of shots. Top scorers Zach Copeland and Adrian Nelson, both with 19 points, and Filip Stanic, with 12 points, struck back to make it 44:43, after which the home side drained a three to make it 44:46 at half-time. Was it Hamburg's clear lead at the break that threw Bamberg off its stride, or was it a symbol of Bamberg's entire season? In the third quarter, the Woltmann players did not want to succeed at all, especially in defense. Oldenburg conceded 36 points to the visitors in the space of ten minutes, while Bamberg got stuck time and again in offense. There was no catching up after the third quarter (64:82). Although Justin Gray reduced the deficit to 80:92 at one stage, the next blackout followed - a run of 1:15 and the season was over.

Arne Woltmann (Head Coach Bamberg Baskets) commented: "Oldenburg's arena was there, the energy was there and we weren't able to match that. We congratulate Oldenburg and all the teams who reached the play-in games. We'll be back next season."

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, there will be the end-of-season party at the Strullendorf training center starting at 5 p.m.
