Kevin Krawietz is in the last sixteen at Wimbledon
Kevin Krawietz, the tennis professional from Coburg, has reached the Round of 16 in the doubles at the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. In the second round, the 26-year-old and his partner Andreas Mies defeated the eleventh seeds Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay) and Marcel Granollers (Spain) in three sets on early Friday afternoon. The German duo took the first two sets relatively clearly by 6:3 and 6:4. The third set was then much tighter and went to a tie-break, in which Krawietz/Mies kept their cool to clinch it by 7:3.
Reaching the last sixteen at the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament is the biggest success in the career of the player from Coburg to date. He and his partner are assured of 29,000 pounds in prize money, as well as 180 points in the doubles world rankings. Krawietz, who is currently number 86 in the world, will likely make a significant leap forward after the tournament.
He and Mies, who hails from Cologne, now have a breather before they are back in action on Monday, July 9. Their opponents in the Round of 16 will be the number seven seeds Mike Bryan and Jack Sock from the U.S., who defeated a Dutch pairing in four sets in the second round.
