Krawietz/Mies advance to the quarter-finals of the US Open

New York, 09-01-2019

Kevin Krawietz and his partner Andreas Mies have reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York. The German duo lined up on Sunday against Marcelo Arévalo from San Salvador and the British player Jonny O’Mara. Krawietz/Mies sealed victory by 3:6, 6:3, 6:4 to clinch a place in the last eight of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament.

In the first round, Krawietz/Mies defeated the Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner and the British player Dominic Inglot in straight sets by 6:4, 7:5. They also won in two sets in the second round on Saturday against the two Americans Martin Damm and Toby Alex Kodat (6:2, 7:5).

Against Arévalo/O’Mara, Krawietz/Mies broke serve in the third game, but their opponents managed to break back. The pairing of Arévalo/O’Mara then held to love and achieved another break to take the first set after 28 minutes. The second set was also evenly matched. Krawietz/Mies laid the foundation to tie the encounter with breaks to make it 1:3 and 2:4 and so finally take the second set by 6:3 after one hour and eight minutes. Krawietz/Mies broke their opponents’ serve right away in the third set and, after 1 hour and 43 minutes, capitalized on the first of two match balls to take the deciding set by 6:4. As a result, the French Open winners have advanced to the quarter-finals of the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. Either Łukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo or the duo Leonardo Mayer/Joao Sousa await them there.
