medi Bayreuth loses 79:88 to Ulm after a strong first half
medi Bayreuth got off to a highly promising start in its second home game in the easyCredit German Basketball League. As in the previous week in Würzburg, the team of Head Coach Raoul Korner started with aggressive defending and wonderful play in offense. Hassan Martin stood out once again and Ulm was not able to get a handle on him. As a result, Bayreuth was nine points in front at the end of the first period.
That gap grew to more than ten points in the second quarter. It was only after Thorsten Leibenath called a timeout that the visitors got better into the game briefly. Seven quick points induced Raoul Korner to call his first timeout. Things went far better again for medi Bayreuth after that. Kassius Robertson, who produced his best game so far for medi, was repeatedly there to finish moves. Since the home side also dominated the rebounding department and Ulm had problems from the three-point line, Bayreuth went in at half-time 48:35 ahead.
If the first half was a mirror image of the first 20 minutes in Würzburg, so too was the second, unfortunately. Back on court, Ulm adopted a full-court press and so posed huge problems for Bayreuth in its build-up. Even a quick timeout did little to change that. A bucket by Andreas Seiferth was the only addition to the scoreboard for the home side for a long time. Only two threes by De’Mon Brooks and another from Kassius Robertson restored the ten-point cushion. Led on by Javonte Green, however, the club from Swabia clawed its way back point by point and was even able to go in front briefly. A final spurt secured Bayreuth a narrow five-point lead at the end of the period.
medi Bayreuth initially stabilized itself in the fourth period and scored beautifully carved-out buckets again. With 5:40 minutes remaining, the team of captain Bastian Doreth was still seven points ahead and even had the chance to stretch that gap on several occasions. Yet nothing came off for it after that: The home side conceded too many turnovers and Ulm now clearly dominated the rebounding. Two free throws by De’Mon Brooks were the only points for his side in the remainder of the encounter. Since Ulm added a hefty 18 points in the same period of time, medi Bayreuth even ended up losing this German league game by a clear margin.
