2.BBL: Coburg Achieves Breakthrough Victory After Overtime!

Schelkingen, 12-07-2024

The BBC Coburg had to wait five games for a victory. But on the sixth attempt, the Vestestädter finally broke their winless streak against TEAM EHINGEN URSPRING. The hard-fought 84:90 (45:39) victory after overtime not only gives Coburg breathing room in terms of staying in the league but also brings Head Coach Patrick Seidel's team back into the fight for playoff spots. The best scorer for BBC was returnee Adrian Petkovic with 25 points. Additionally, Coburg's captain Nico Wenzl, who played 43 of the possible 45 minutes on the court that evening, recorded a double-double with 18 points and an impressive eleven assists.

However, Coburg started the game cautiously against the second-to-last team in the standings. The hosts repeatedly scored points in the first quarter, mainly through second or even third shot opportunities. Added to this were some turnovers, which collectively led to Ehingen leading 29:14 after the first ten minutes. But after a bit of a slow start, the Vestestädter, who could once again rely on Adrian Petkovic, found their way into the game. A significantly increased shooting percentage from beyond the 6.75m line and smart passes from Petkovic and captain Nico Wenzl ensured that BBC gradually reduced the deficit by halftime. The score was 45:39 for the hosts at the break. In the second half, Coburg continued where they left off in the second quarter. The lead of the "Team in Green" melted away, and finally, it was center Abdul Karioui who brought the first BBC lead to the scoreboard with a dunk in the middle of the third quarter. From then on, a back-and-forth battle ensued until the final minute, in which the Vestestädter set the score to 78:80 with a free throw by Nico Höllerl 52 seconds before the end. But in direct response, Ehingen equalized, and the game went into overtime after a Coburg turnover and a missed three-pointer by the Swabians. In overtime, one man had the hot hand: Adrian Petkovic. Coburg's point guard contributed a layup and two three-pointers in overtime. Added to this was good defense on the other side. The guests allowed Ehingen only four points in the extra period, and so the second of the outstanding BBC duo in the backcourt, Nico Wenzl, was able to seal the deal at the free-throw line 19 seconds before the end.

For BBC Coburg, the next task awaits next Saturday (14.12.) with another away game. At the farm team of the Bundesliga club from Ludwigsburg, Coburg now aims to confirm their success against Ehingen and continue to gain ground in the standings.
